How Celibidache understands the glowing passion in the music of Brahms! It is wonderful to hear that.

Before hearing this recording, my favourite rendition was that of Jochum with the LPO. While it still remains that, this is most definitely second behind that, despite their contrasting characteristics. Until today, I have been critical of conductors that have taken slow tempos for this piece (barenboim etc.) since they all felt like they did not have a clear direction. Celibidache gives this an ultimate purpose from the booming timpani at the start to the proud coda at the end. This truly is a masterpiece.

Brahms en estado puro. Hace falta a Celinbidache para algo así.

49:40 that section rarely goes well. Not sure why, but I always listen for it. It didn't fall apart here, which is a success! It can be a train wrench in performance but everyone gets back on track quickly.

Maestro Celibidache in this version actually elevates the tragic Brahms symphony into the sublime Brahms symphony. It is more like op. 116-119, very meditative, rather than emotive, Brahms the mystic philosopher, the Messiah of Music suggested by Robert Schumann. It is a Symphony of Sermons on the Mount. The mournful is blessed !

Musica pura. Para ouvidos atentos e dispostos a mergulhar na romantica, profunda e visceralmente terrena arte do imenso Brahms. Imenso Celibidache!

Up to now, I never heard of Celebidache but now that I keep seeing his name flash before me, he is getting to be one of my favorite conductors because of the way he conducts Bruckner and Brahms, nice and slow and with much feeling.
