This symphony took Brahms 20 years to write because he said it felt like Beethoven (who was dead) was looking over his shoulder and man what a great piece he wrote

I have been listening to this symphony since the early 1980s. This might just be one of the most electric renditions I have ever heard. The final coda is awe inspiring here.

I heard this at The Proms. I was late returning back to my standing spot after the interval. I was running along the corridor. The lights dimmed, and the music started. The timpani and sighing strings. It felt just like being in a dream, where you are trying to run but not going anywhere. Whenever I hear the opening, I am reminded vividly of this.

Wow, that modulation moment at 44:34 - 45:00is one of the amazing passages in all music, just stunning. My orchestra have just performed this symphony, and that moment remains with me,

Truly one of the great symphonies the world has come to know. Thank you Johannes Brahms for this wonderful gift. Maestro Jarvi and the Orchestre de Paris perform it perfectly.

It took me a while to enjoy Brahms. It's a bit like taking in a piece of art so large and detailed that it takes a few trips to see enough to enjoy it. There are just so many details in this work.

I LOVE Jarvi's intensity, whether he is conducting Brahms, Beethoven, Schumann, Mendelssohn, or Tchaikovsky. And he is perfect for Brahms' intensity here. :)

Simply magnificent. Brahms starts the symphony strong, gets stronger as he goes along, raises the bar in the Finale, and takes it to a whole other level in the coda. I love Maestro Järvi's tempos, too. Nothing too rushed, nothing too slow. Everything feels natural. Wonderful performance by a great conductor and a world-class orchestra.

Concerning the tympani at the opening: Yes, the thumping line of drum-strokes is more prominent than in most performances I have heard, but I think it works well. The tympani (along with double-bass and contrabassoon) provides the only stable line in the orchestra, which is otherwise divided into melodic lines pulling up and down away from each other. Also, I think Jervi's approach is consistent with an increasing awareness that the symphonies of Brahms (and Beethoven) should not sound like chamber music. There is sinewy power in these works, and other conductors have also seen fit to let the music ring out. Yes, there is still a need for restraint, but restraint does not mean stifling the music, and Jervi's interpretation here in no way violates that need. Rather, I think we are merely surprised by the sound he elicits by allowing the music's intrinsic strength to be fully heard. I'd say this is an excellent performance.
