Once again, the great Phil Lesh is expanding my musical understanding and appreciation. Man, I'm gonna miss him.

Excellent performance of my favourite Brahms symphony. Strange to see the orchestra playing in this empty concert venue during the pandemic, but so glad they did.

I read Brahmas said it took him 20 years to write his 1st symphony. He felt like Beethoven was looking over his shoulder

32:51 - The best part in the piece starts.

Well, the main theme of the finale of the First Symphony is also reminiscent of the main theme of the finale of Beethoven's Ninth, and when this resemblance was pointed out to Brahms he replied that any dunce could see that! In 1876, when the work was premiered in Vienna, it was immediately hailed as "Beethoven's Tenth"!

I agree, the second movement is beautiful

The brief almost Classical opening moment at 2:55-3:05 is so much better than the rest of the piece it sounds out of place.

The second movement is one of his best, should be played as a separate piece, like Mahler's adagietto and Barber's adagio for strings.
