Really appreciated your take on this, thanks Frank! In regards to your mention of Nvidia, I believe the open source driver is getting some major updates soon (along with NVK being a part of Mesa - the open source graphics stack) so hopefully that provides a competitive edge against the proprietary driver.

Best of luck with your adventure of Pop_OS, it's a very fantastic Linux distro! I'm excited to try it again when their new Cosmic desktop comes out :)

The main Mint edition is the better of the two versions for new users, I have not used Windows for good few years now as I can do everything I need to do on Linux. Once you get the bug, Linux is not just a distro but a way of life.

I installed Pop OS instead of Linux Mint but after a while I ended up returning. Reasons: 1) after the OS slept with a game playing I never got my desktop back. 2) I have two programs I want loaded at bootup. In Mint it is very easy to do. In PopOS it is nearly impossible to do. 3) There are many things in the UI that is still missing that is present in Mint.

I use Windows and the Brave browser stutters and freeze allot. I use Firefox and Vivaldi (main) now, and they work ok. I'm waiting for the new Cosmic DE to start to use Linux. I'll keep Windows in a 2nd drive and Bios Booting between them if needed.

I was using POP OS and really liked it. Then after a major update it broke. The only way to fix it was a reinstall. I switched over to Mint and have had no issues. Everything works well.

I spent a year or so hopping. My preference is Fedora gnome but I constantly have problems with it on wake from sleep so I have to try others. Right now I'm using mint 21.3.

Why did you pick LMDE over the main distro? The Debian Edition is basically a backup project for Linux Mint to make sure they can continue if Ubuntu ever disappears. Most users should always go with the main Mint distro as it's more stable and supported.

Pop OS is a good choice. I have an asus tuf gaming laptop that came with windows 11, i flashed and clean installed pop os on it it worked like a charm. Pop OS is the best NVIDIA + hybrid graphics distro you can find. it has an nvidia version of the iso which gives you working nvidia drivers out of the box, also they work nice with the new display protocol Wayland (if you enable it). Pop OS is THE laptop distro and i like it. now theyre developing the rust cosmic desktop which im not a big fan of it's looks to be honest, when the time comes they will drop the gnome desktop and switch to it

I used mint for years but classic ones, not LMDE, and that is the only ones that i think is fine for a desktop user. Nothing bad with LMDE, but if you need to install a lot of things to customize it, well is not the right distro tha fits for your needs. And in my opinion debian 12 > LMDE. A part from this, i don't know POPOS but mint ubuntu based is good. I use arch and manjaro now, but mint is still my fav
