SWANN-MORTON HOBBY KNIVES & SCALPELS FOR SCALE MODELS

For a long time we used standard X-Acto type hobby knives but we found they tended to require constant blade changes - something that costs a lot of money in the long run.

Then we discovered Swann-Morton tools & scalpels. These precision tools come from a medical background but are essential for scale model makers.

In this five-minute video we look at their surgical-style scalpel handles & blades. We've found them indispensable in our hobby & what's more, non-sterile blades are very cheap to buy in bulk.

I tried some cutters from modelling companies but i wasnt satisfied from their quality. I bought a scalpel and a hobby knife from Swann-Morton and i never looked back again. Top quality products, totally recommended.

How to apply the blade onto the handle.. I couldn’t do it

The surgical SM blades are much sharper than the generic hobby blades. The blades are also a bit thinner.

They also do the Swann-Morton Cygnetic Handle and Blades easier to change blades plus the blades are stainless steel so they don't snap like the normal blades.
But there is only four types of blades.

Always used scalpels, excellent for fettling too. Cheap too. I steer clear of any ''Hobby'' branded stuff, just a pure rip off. I just buy standard surgical ones... they're all you need...Plus using dental materials are excellent fillers - such as flowable composite or standard composite, acrylic denture repair powder, amalgam for metal moulding, alginate and 2 part dental putty for impressions for forms for molding... as well as dental instruments.

Are these ACM handles actually made by Swann Morton themselves? I asked because I have exactly the same handles in both the light and heavy sizes which are made and stamped by Excel in the US? The only difference I see hear is that instead of seeing the Excel - made in the USA stamp, I see Swann Morton, Sheffield.

Do surgical blades i.e. 10A fit to K1 Excel knife? It would be perfect....

This was a nice, relaxing video. The tools look very nice but I don't think it would be cost effective to order them from over here in the US.

I use scalpels for my modelling. Way better than craft knives especially for removing flash from fine parts.

Thank you for this clip ! I hope I can get some need some assistance from you. I into leather craft, and heard scalpel knives are very useful, how ever the seller gave me a scalpel handle no 3 along with a number 24 blade, and I just cannot seem to slide it thru. I think the seller either gave me the wrong handle or the wrong blade. I would like your advice as to what number blade would be suitable for cutting 2 mil leather? Would it be the number 10 blade you in this video or would a number 24 blade be more suitable for my purpose with I assume a number 4 scalpel holder? What is your suggestion on both handle and blade for leather craft? Much appreciate a response and thank you in advance 🙏🏼

Those Thin standard Scalpel handles are too hard to handle in my opinion I Much prefer the Bard Parker #5 and #6 Scalpel
handles with Nice Ergonomic Plastic Grips . Just my preference : ))
