I grew up in Oregon during my coming of age 1970s teenage years and recall when word of his death in the car wreck was broadcast. I wouldn’t begin long distance running in high school for another year after his death. Everything, and I mean everything, you have ever heard about Pre still resonates to this day.

He was gritty, blue collar, direct, spartan, industrial, and no nonsense on his feet, all in one package. A special person you just knew was destined to push the limits and went to the place most people just never get around to going to.

Yet, even if you never met him personally, you just felt you knew him and felt the honor of being near the same plane of existence, within the boundaries of the State of Oregon, where he did his thing.

Simply a timeless legacy we all can still draw from. Pre would have made a GREAT US President. Pre was the embodiment and best of the Oregon way. Catch him and keep up with him, which very few ever could, if you can. It really would have been special and magical to see him Gold medal in the 76 Montreal Olympics.
