It took me a LONG time to figure this out for myself . I remember saying to my best friend, "bro! just go to the root, go down three frets, and solo like thats the root!" oh it was such an awesome discovery but I'm glad I've since developed a better understanding. Never put it down 🎸

Been playing just over a year. Every so often I stagnate then it takes a few weeks to watch or hear something that makes things click and I move on up a level. This is one of those. Thankyou

Nice! Real simple, explained slowly and no 10 minute monologue before you get to the main point. Sub’ed.

You’re an absolute legend! Been mucking around with the major scale for a month or so now. You made more sense of it in a 5 min video than a month of practice. If you have a website with coarses? Let me know!!!!

I’ve never heard someone explain it like this before but this helps make it click so much better! So many videos will be like “alright we’re playing in the key of E so you want to use the Z pentatonic scale” and I’m always thinking why??? Thank you for this breakdown, definitely subscribing for more!

I’m not sure what you are getting at here. If you are in G major you can use the g major pentatonic. Is it the same notes as the e minor pentatonic? Yes. But you shouldnt think of it as the em pentatonic, you should think of it as the G major pentatonic. Same notes, different root. Another way to look at it is to play the pentatonic scale a minor third below the minor pentatonic to get the major sound. So in the case of g major, yes play the e minor pentatonic, but center your melodies around the G root and not E as you would if you were playing straight up blues.

Want a REALLY cool trick? If you are in g major and you want an incredibly hip sound, play the minor pentatonic scale a half step below (so for g major, play the F# minor pentatonic box) SO COLORFUL. So colorful in fact that the root will almost sound boring and out of place.

The ii is pretty common, in some types of pentatonic based music its more common. As long as we're just applying it as an overlay over diatonic stuff you might as well know every place it can go since it's the same pattern.

That being said If we're talking blues or jazz it becomes less about a distinct tonal center and more about which 5 chords tones from whatever chord you're currently on are the focus. If you base it on the root of whatever chord you're on it ends up being r 3m 4th 5th 7m and the implication is those minor intervals can be microtonally bent halfway up to major 3rds and 7ths. That's partly why you can play them over dominant and major chords, but you can also just play them over those conflicting intervals and they rub against them in a bluesy way. So it being aeolian is entirely irrelevant. It ends up just being various chord extensions that don't fit within the diatonic tones of the key.

I love that I’ve been finding absolute gems of knowledge scattered throughout my YouTube shorts. Shame that these are the smaller creators. Suggestion - if this is geared towards novice/intermediate players, do you mind putting fret diagrams on the screen? Just a suggestion! I’ll be looking to try this later.

Great teacher and player. And ugly relic job on that Strat. Or is it meant to be reliced?

Why not just use the major pentatonic for the key you're in? It's the same scale and you don't have to figure out what the 6th is.
