I'd love to see more research about humidity and uncurling foils

I'd like to see you try the humidity hack with fewer cards in the box. I think having that whole stack made it more difficult for all of them to re-humidify.

Regarding the moisture of foils: Paper expands when damp. Foil does not.
So if your moisture is too LOW, it will curve foil-forwards as the paper pulls together behind it. Fix it by leaving it in the bathroom while you take a hot shower.
And if your moisture is too HIGH it will curve foil-backwards as the paper pushes out around it from behind. Fix it with a hot blow drier.
Either way, once you have it straight, double sleeve it to lock it to the proper humidity forever.

The double sleeve issue is the entire reason I switched to Dragon Shield perfect fit *sealable* inners. They have a tail that folds up inside the inner (no adhesive) that both further seals the card and prevents it from popping out when sliding into the outer. They're actually ridiculously good.

never thought about turning your cards upside-down to keep track of revealed cards. going to use that from now on.

Foils do curl because of humidity. The back paper side expands and contracts with humidity, higher humidity means expansion. You can tell if your foils are too moist or too dry based on which way they are curling.

Bonus Hack: When putting older cards in sleeves (especially revised or any white border set) let the edge of the sleeve glide across the front surface of the card as it is entering. The sheets are pressed from the front which makes a very minor bevel causing less nicks to the edges. Also any nicks on the back of the card are much more visible because of it's black border.

The curling depends on humidity. Foil doesnt stretch, so if it is too dry, the card will bend at the back. But if it is wet, the card will bent at the front. So it is good to keep just enough humidity to have the cards straight.

I double sleeve by using a token card I put onto the sleeved card while pushing it into the outer sleeve. That way I prevent any air building up a "pocket". Works better than the finger imo.

My solution to curved foils has traditionally been to find the heaviest history books I have from grad school and leave the cards under them for a while so this is neat to learn.

If your cards are curling towards the back the humidity is too low. If your cards are curling towards the front the humidity is too high.

I don't play MTG, but your channel is always so entertaining and you explain things very well, I'm highly reconsidering playing and I'm gonna buy a deck in the next few weeks!

That double sleeving trick blew my mind. I can’t even tell you how frustrating double sleeving can be because of that and I’ve thrown out so many sleeves as a result.

The double sleeve finger trick was my favourite. Can't wait to try it out.

For the humidity reversal. I've heard something similar with bread.
When bread gets hard, it's not dried out. But has absorbed too much moisture.

Now uncurl them even further untill they curl in the other direction. Then let them dry in the sun for 4 months. Recolor them with a marker, which may leave some creases. Then iron them between two patches of cotton fabric to remove the creases and VOILA

My curled foil trick: I take my cards and tape them to my legs and thighs (Sleeved and curl side out, of course!). Then I go about my work day. When I get home and peel them off, the tape tears so much hair off my legs I get mad and tear up the cards in pain and throw them away. Voila, no more curling! Hope this helps.

As someone who lives in the desert, I can confirm that curling isn't always caused by too much humidity. I despise foils for just this reason but maybe I'll give them another shot with this trick.

Uncurlng foils is so much easier then that. Just double sleeve them, put them in a deck box and pack it as tight as possible. When you aren't playing the cards they just straighten out.
