A rather rare beast. A 1949 Kolster Brands wire recorder.
The quality is quite amazing considering it's recorded on steel wire.

If you don't already know this, the standardized running speed of recording wire is 24 inches per second. About 61 centimeters per second. I also have wire recorder in my queue for restoration soon. It's beautiful that you have a machine that is in such excellent condition. Mine has a metal case and is covered in nicotine. Everyone smoked back then. When a baby was born and got whacked on the bottom, he'd turn to the doc and say, "Got a light?" (Mothers used to smoke up to and including in the delivery room. Laugh. It's funny because it is SO wrong AND true!)

I am amazed at the quality of the recording! Didn't think that wire recorders had the degree of fidelity. Thanks for sharing. Can you provide a link to the theory of operation of the wire recorders?

I haven't seen any wire recorders / players here in the uk. My Webster Chicargo I had to import from the US. Wish I could find one here and especially one like this. I guess they must be rare.

Surprising good quality. What is the duration of one of those little spools and can you still obtain them?

Unfortunately, it's really hard to evaluate the quality of audio in this video. Hopefully, it's not worth than that out of regular audio cassette we used to use in 90s.
