Not sure what one wins, but my new 710 is the best hearing radio I've ever used, ever over 45 years, full stop.

The 710 just because it’s just HF, in the past radios with multiple bands like HF/UHF/Vhf rigs can be a problem . I had the 857-D and 2 meters went out and the rest of the radio was unusable

991a for the uhf- vhf capabilities. this is the radio I want.

I haven't done any radio for over 20 years, and I'm ready to get back into it. Thanks for the comparison. I was thinking a lot about the 991a, but also the FTDX10, and a couple others. I really don't think I can make a bad choice. The big plus for the 991a is the VHF/UHF, but it's not necessary. I'm still thinking.

I own the FT-710. My biggest complaint is that the microphone and mic buttons feel so cheap.

Don't understand why these two are pitched 'against' each other - they are Apples and Oranges.
FT-991A has VHF and UHF, C4FM, Wires-X AND a built in Antenna Tuner, and also does *everything* the FT-710 does - with the small exception of the 70.000 to 70.499Mhz 'band' (Anyone using that?... I thought not). That makes it technically MUCH MORE for LESS MONEY! _and_ in a smaller form all of which in turn makes it a clear 'winner'.
FT-710 has a nicer display and doubles down on this 'feature' by also having the ability to attach an even BIGGER screen - anyone who sees that as their primary objective is absolutely missing the POINT of radio operation which is to transmit and receive.
Each radio is pitched at two different mindsets at opposite ends of the 'spectrum':
FT-710 for the 'Artists'
FT-991A for the 'Engineers'
