How To Remove Read-Only From A Microsoft Word Document [Tutorial]

If you don't want content reviewers to accidentally modify your document, you can make the document read only before sending it for review. Another method is to restrict formatting and editing.

Making your document a read-only file means that the document can be read or copied but not modified. If one of the reviewers tries to make changes to a read-only file, the changes can be saved only by giving the document a new name or saved to a new location.

If you open a Word document and can view it but can't make edits to it, the document is in Protected View mode. The document's creator has enabled this mode to protect the content of the document. If you downloaded the document from the Internet, Word opens it in Protected View mode. You can re-enable editing on the document.

Protected View mode prevents the original document from being modified. If you do make edits to a document with Protected View, you have to save the file with a new name or in another location, but your changes aren't saved to the original document. When a document is downloaded from the Internet, this serves to protect you from any malicious content the file might contain.

If the document is not password-protected, you can disable Protected View mode. Click the "Review" tab and click "Restrict Editing." All restrictions are removed, and you can edit the document. If the document is password-protected, you need to contact the document's creator for the password.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems.Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung).

A short, clear video without the usual "fillers" and it works.

I have an older version of Word and it constantly will not save anymore when i try to make adjustments to a Word document -saying this is "Read only." The process is different -- you go to -File-Save as--options-- ---there is the "read only recommended" which IS UNCHECKED-- but it STILL will not save and constantly brings up--"this is a read only file"---I am thinking the only option is to uninstall an re-install the Program... frustrating...

If none of those options work, try to disable your antivirus ransomware, and open your document again. Avast is notorious for preventing proper use of some of the Word's features.
