Why I'm Throwing My Whoop In The Trash

I've been tracking my sleep every day for 5 years and although I love my Oura ring, it's pretty useless when it comes to fitness.

With so many of my friends swearing by the Whoop 4.0 and telling me how much they love it, I thought this might be the all-encompassing device I've been searching for.

But after using and wearing it for the past a year, I've decided to cancel my subscription and throw it in the trash.

Watch this video to find out why.

2:42 you're complaining that it doesn't take how well rested you are into account for the recovery score, while showing that it does. You got 92% of the ideal sleep duration, but because your resting heart rate was higher than average, and you hrv was lower than average, you got a yellow recovery. That's whoop taking into account the overall state of your body, not just sleep duration.

If you want to know your rem and deep sleep durations, those are also available to view in the sleep tab. There's a graph that shows your restorative sleep over time.

If you want to keep the woop away from your head while you're sleeping, you can lengthen the strap (or get a second strap from ebay or etsy) and wear it on your ankle. Woop doesn't have to be worn on your wrist, it just needs to be in contact with skin.

4:18 It IS supposed to do that! It's designed to be easy to take the strap off the sensor, so that you can easily wash both and the strap and the sensor, and switch to a different strap. You didn't read the instructions that came with it. Did you not attempt to wash it even once before your girlfriend complained? That explains why it got so disgusting.

I think this video is an honest assessment. Much needed.

1. Charger is USB c. You will not have to purchase another charger as you likely have one.

2. Whoop does have a strain score for Strength Training workouts that accounts for the lower HR.

3. My Wife and I have had our bands for 2+ years, no smell and extremely sturdy.

4. Whoop tells you your "restorative sleep" calculating REM and Deep. They don't try to hide the fact that your sleep percentage is based on total time.

The monthly option is £27 per month, every month with no discount, absolutely overpriced for a health tracker which has had no upgrade for several years now, and no feedback from the developers for when 5.0 is coming. A joke for what the competitors offer

So I have a Whoop, and have the same struggles with it. Ive also had the Oura ring and liked it, except for the lack of fitness part. I have an AW Ultra and the Athlytic app, but my HUGE issue with Athlytic is that that it doesn't factor your sleep into your recover score. it literally says that in the app. Supposedly the reason being is that you could only sleep for 5 hrs, but have a really good HRV so you're good to push it. However, as an amateur athlete, I truly feel that sleep, both duration and quality are really what drive recovery on a day to day basis. HRV is a nice trend to see over time, and if you could be overtraining, but I really don't believe it has that it has the same impact that sleep has on whether or not your are recovered. This is the big problem that I have with Whoop and to and extent the Oura ring. Whoop definitely prioritizes your daily HRV value over sleep. Three days ago, I slept 6hrs, but had a slightly elevated HRV so I got a Green Recovery, but Im not gonna lie, I was exhausted and could barely turn the pedals. The next day was red, because I had a couple beers, but I slept 7.5hrs (I know alcohol is bad), but I actually felt great all day. Then today I slept 9hrs, but had a low HRV maybe because I'm at altitude and in a very dry climate, and was back down to yellow, but barely above Red. I went out for a 10k Tempo run and felt amazing. I also have a Garmin FR955 and honestly I think the data is the most accurate to how I feel, though the app is a little lackluster. I really want a device or app that prioritizes sleep for recovery and just gives the HRV for trend purposes to see if I'm getting sick or overtraining.

Seems you did not actually use the device and did zero research. Case in point; The cable is USB-C. Most people having it laying around. Should have just led with you don't like, didn't give it a try and send people to your friend who actually had valid feedback. Love your other videos. This one was not helpful at all.

It seems to be that Fitbit should tick all your boxes. The Inspire 3 has 10 day battery life, is super accurate and is so light and compact you forget you are wearing it. Plus the app is super easy and you can dig as deep into the stats as you feel you need to.

Has this guy never seen a usb-c cable before?

Made some good points here. The weight lifting part is a big issue for me. I also like that my Garmin doesn't need a phone nearby to function.

So...I´m using whoop for a few years now (started with the 3rd Gen Wristband) and it definitely has it´s pro´s and con´s.
But so does pretty much everything. There´s no "one fit´s all" in my oppinion.

But I have to give my 2cents to some pints you made in the vid.

1. You have to buy new Bands because they get dirty/disgusting
Sure you have to, but so you do if you are using a smartwatch or pretty much any fabric thats close to your body.
Even these rubber-wristbands of the smartwatches get absolutely disgusting and you have to buy a new one.
And if I´m looking at the prices for 90% of fitness tracking devices, the device itself costs you anything between 300€ and more (living in
europe so can´t speak for amerika). Sure the monthly plan isn´t the cheapest and you have to count that in as well, but for the data it
provides you, I think its a fair price and they are constantly working and improving the software and the devices, so in my oppinion, that
price is okay.

2. Broken wristband
Sure it shouldn´t happen but I´ve made the experience, that whoop is super quick and costumer friendly in handling such cases.
My wristband broke after 6 weeks of normal usage and after some e-mails I´ve got a new wristband sent to me for free.
Don´t know if you tried that, just wanted to throw that out there.

3. The point of your friend - whoop is overwhelming sometimes
Well I do agree to a degree. Yes if you go through every single number it CAN provide you with, it gets overwhelming.
But to be honest, I got that device to track my health/fitness/sleep. I wouldn´t be paying the monthly price if it would give me any less data.
So it´s basically just about what you look at/ what you take or want. If you want only basic stuff I´d recommend everyone to get a smartwatch.
But that´s pretty much what he recommended anyway with the apple watch.

4. Charging
I´m definitively on your side with that one. I´d love to be able to charge the whoop itself without the battery pack.
But I´ve never managed to lose mine, so that´s not a point I can really say anything about. I forgot to bring it with me, that definitively,
but I´ve never lost one. But yeah, "direct" charge for the whoop would be great, even if it would be via wireless charging.

Thanks for the video, loved the pace and quality of it!

this is the densest video. 1 & 2: this sounds like a you problem. 3 & 4: incorrect - both these are false. 5; you smell, this is a you problem, maintain good personal hygiene. 6

Whoop data is not accurate. I have use it and the sleep tracker is horrible, 2h difference of the time I woke up, is just going with the HR and guessing, completely waste of money. If it worked, it would be different.

Unfortunately Whoop does not let people cancel subscriptions that have gone past 30 day trial 😢.

The app can't even link to the device, acts like an untested beta release of the device.... utterly useless.

Just buy a Garmin 965 It has suggests daily runs and you can use it for Strength Training. It has everything you need.

I bought a Whoop. Had terrible experience with it tracking my heart rate. I would be killing it in the gym and it would show my HR at about 89. I have very small wrist, maybe that factor in too. My original 1st generation Apple Watch did the same thing. Got frustrated with Whoop and quit wearing. Bought a new Apple Watch in 2022 and it tracks HR perfectly without the high priced Whoop subscription.

My Whoop def accounted my sleep quality into my sleep score, but it still wasn’t accurate to my lived experience. I’d wake up tired on mornings when I said I have super high recovery. I think it just doesn’t track enough things when a person has autoimmune conditions.
