Building Your Mental Health Team: A Treatment-Team Approach to Mental Illness

Your mental health team is essential for your success in beating depression and anxiety. And while most people don’t have the opportunity to go to residential treatment if they need it, there is one thing that I’ve taken from my experience there that helps me be a better therapist now than I was before. And that’s taking a team approach to treatment.
In this video, I’m going to talk about how you can create an environment where healing is possible so that you can increase your chances of beating your mental illness.

Check out my favorite books for mental health:

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

A healing environment is defined as one that has a nurturing and therapeutic effect. Studies show that well-designed hospital environments can reduce patients' anxiety and stress, accelerate recovery, shorten hospitalizations, reduce medication use, lessen pain, and promote a sense of well-being.

I deeply appreciate that you have made your wisdom available to us here. It's practical, nurturing, authentic, and clear. Hello and big love to all who are paying attention to these issues because of their own challenges. Mental pain can be so debilitating and sometimes just sitting with the discomfort and feeling it for a moment is a release and step forward. We can do this because there are talented skilled folks like you, Emma McAdam willing to share so generously. Thank you, All.

I’m blessed to have an amazing therapist who always makes me feel comfortable, safe, and supported. Unfortunately, my home life makes me feel the opposite most of the time, which makes it difficult to heal. I wish my parents were willing to work with me until I can afford to move out. Still, I do what I can with help from my friends.

Thank you for this video
I’m in trauma therapy and I go twice a month for an hour
I don’t see how this is working
I find I’m more depressed and that no one cares sometimes I wish I was able to have access to all these things you are talking about..sometimes it’s mentally exhausting trying to talk to anyone and asking for help when
I was abused for over 40 years and I just got laid off again
Thank you for your kind videos.. they do help❤️

Just the placement of you being in a garden and around the life of the plants is a major therapy because the plantlife gives off healing energy. Like i believe that the entire mental health system should include like a biosphere type place.
Thankyou for working towards helping people and empowering people. We have a grand misconception that these mental health labels stick and that these people are broken forever and that is not true! Balancing the energy and having a whole n wellness approach and also even telling them that they can are powerful healers themselves and are basically in training to be therapists themselves.
There is a chemical and biological and bacterial aspect too. Like our vibration affects our reality well being. I just wanted to give much praise to you for working in this field and i wish that i could somehow help n contribute. I have had to experience some very tough things and had to go on a healing journey myself. Ive learned alot and am still learning. I just want to commend you n Blessings to you sweetheart!!!

They were very fortunate to have a therapist that cared so much! I've never accessed anyone as warm and genuine. I'm pretty discouraged about it

I like how you're ending with a challenge lately to just try one thing you've mentioned! Doable but not overwhelming.

I feel so jaded. I feel like the mental health system chewed me up and spit me out. Just sitting and talking about problems can be helpful to get the feelings out but only action can solve things. Seeing a psychiatrist doesn't help me anymore. I need to figure out how to get off of disability and make some money instead of doctors and therapists making money off of me. I'm 50 now, I don't have much life left. I used to wish I could make something out of myself, my life is just a downward spiral that just gets worse. I'm just supposed to accept it.

I have a treatment team and I'm so thankful for it. I have a therapist, pdoc, case manager, and go to a psych social program. Limited to phone calls I also have family nearby that are supportive. I've come a long way over the years. i also have physical issues that feed off each other. They all work together what they can.

Thank you that was good on one hand, I found that counsellors that I saw, mine, & ones in group didnt know how significant stigma played & how mental illness & chronic pain & how ptsd & stigma & how they are Invisible illnesses, & what impact they play with getting support & even from health care workers , the multi disciplinary team, we get Secondary wounded, shamed, depressed when we weren't depressed, , ect.
I'm letting you know
