What is an Interstitial Lung Disease? This video covers the medical definition and provides a brief overview of this topic.

➡️ Interstitial Lung Disease
Interstitial Lung Disease is a broad term used to describe a group of lung disorders that cause fibrosis (scarring) of lung tissue. This results in stiffness, which decreases lung compliance and oxygenation, and makes it more difficult to breathe. Unfortunately, once this type of lung damage has occurred, it’s typically irreversible and progressively gets worse over time.

➡️ Causes
- Connective tissue diseases
- Autoimmune diseases
- Malignancy
- Drug-induced
- Infections
- Inhaled substances

➡️ Causes Explained
ILD can occur secondary to certain connective tissue and autoimmune diseases such as sarcoidosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, systemic sclerosis, and polymyositis. It is also caused by the inhalation of toxic substances, such as asbestosis, silicosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and other occupational and environmental toxins. There are also certain drugs and medications known for causing ILD. Some examples include antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and certain anti-arrhythmic agents. ILD is caused by certain infections, such as atypical pneumonia, RSV, and tuberculosis.

➡️ Signs and Symptoms
- Shortness of breath
- Chest discomfort
- Fatigue
- Nonproductive cough
- Weight loss
- Hypertension

➡️ Treatment
- Oxygen therapy
- Corticosteroid medications
- Pulmonary rehabilitation
- Lung transplantation

The treatment method may also vary depending on the specific cause. For example, if the cause is due to inhalation of a toxic substance, the best treatment would be to avoid said stance. If a specific medication is a known cause, the patient should stop taking that medication. For this video, we just wanted to provide you with a brief overview of this topic. We'll be breaking it down into much more detail in a separate video.

How do you find out if you are breathing toxic substances? I have been living in the same apartment for 14years. It has always had a problem with dust coming in thru the vents, including cigarette smoke. As of late the amount of dust and odd smells has increased greatly. A short while ago the management removed all the great big antennas from on top of the roof. They made rental money from telephone, tv, cable companies and such for allowing them to put and keep them up there. I think it allowed better reception for houses in the area
This is a ten story high rise building. I live on the top floor. So lately my breathing has gotten progressively worse. I have COPD for many years. The doctors I have seen will only renew past prescriptions I have been taking for those many years before and they no longer do much to improve my ability to breathe. What can I do?
