Goodbye Canon, Hello Sony: I sell my last Canon DSLR, the 5D Mark IV

I sell my last Canon DSLR, the Canon 5DIV. I've been with Canon for nearly 7 years already, and I'm finally making the permanent switch over to Sony. What really sparked this change was the recent firmware updates for the Sigma MC-11 that gave near 1 to 1 performance of my Sigma 120-300 Sport lens on my Sony a9.

Started with Nikon during 35 film era was there for 10 years, went to Canon for 25 years and this year bought my first mirrorless Sony....
Bye Nikon, Bye Canon... it was nice knowing you. We had some great times together, but over time it seems I grew and you just stayed the same and not we are so much different... it is time to part our ways. I will never forget you. ...anyone want to buy 75lbs with of Canon?

I understand man! Same here. I am now a fully Sony mirrorless user. It was hard to leave Canon. But now I have moved on, and very happy to use Sony with many vintage and rare manual lenses (with easy to find adapters). It is amazing how these old lenses performs with their unique characteristics, including old manual Canon FD L series. And you are right, IMHO, Sony system does provide more for photographers. So thank you, now I know that I am not alone. 😊

i still have my Canon gear. tried out an a9 and a7iii within the last few days. was impressed with the a7iii in particular for its price point and capabilities which could potentially replace my 5d3. i could actually top up a little more cash and get 2 units of a7iii for the price point of a 5d4. am still holding out for now and watching sigma. however, am planning to get an a7iii by June.

I sold my Canon gear about 4 months ago after having both Sony and Canon for about 6 months prior till I was sure I wanted to move. My reasons are a bit different then other people's comments.
1) I wanted lighter & small so I went with the a6300 and two zooms and two primes (will be three primes soon). I usually have one zoom on camera and a prime in pocket for low light/shallow DOF shot.
2) EVF - seeing what I was truly shooting was great. Even custom WB is visible through the VF so I can see if the customer WB needs a new set.
3) The 6D did a great job, but for me (no paid gigs), the APS-c sensor is fine for what I do.
4) Canon did not offer a comporable mirrorless solution when I got my a6300. Going Canon mirrorless would have been great as I could have used my L glass via adapter.
5) 4K.

It really depends on what you need. For me the dual pixel autofocus from canon is still the best reliable auto focus for my type of work, which is filming dancing videos in unpredictable situations.

What is sad is how many people say "If you want video get a video camera" for canon, I guess the other companies didn't get the memo.

I feel the same way as you do with your passion for the new A9 - only my preferences sway to the Em1 Mk II and the even smaller pkg size. The feature set which comes with the Oly system, makes up everything I feel comfortable with. Hi-Res mode, Live Time/Composite, and doubling the focal length due to 2x sensor crop, gives me what I need in carrying around so much less weight. None of us are getting any good reason to think about taking less gear. A very articulate vid - nice job !

There is still a big problem I have with mirrorless cameras: You do not actually see the subject directly. A few years ago Queen Elizabeth II came to my hometown for example and drove by me in her car. While taking photos with my (Canon) DSLR, I really saw her through an optical viewfinder. So my eyes really saw her. If I had a digital viewfinder - even with millions of pixels - I would only see the artificial light from the viewfinder. It is like watching something on tv.

I know that is quite a theoretical thought, but I often used my camera at events I really want to see with my own eyes. For example the closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics. Seeing it through a digital viewfinder does not really feel like beeing there, as theoretically you could also send this data around the word to a digital viewfinder that is thousands of kilometres away. Or you could also record a video and watch it on the digital viewfinder the next day or a year later. That does not work with an optical viewfinder, which is still the REAL thing.

I own 6D for few years and recently bought a6500 - I did not expect so many important features that sony has over 6D. It blow me away. Auto focus with auto subject / face recognition is amazing. You just frame and shoot. build in flash is amazing and can bounce against the wall or ceiling. I want to invest and switch 6D to A7r II - hopefully it gets cheaper in some year or so

So the only problem is the file video stop dynamic range is 13stops. They offer Canon log to. Those file sizes offer alot of information. Think of it using a complete raw file.

I’ve been a VERY loyal Canon shooter for over 10 years (owned the T3I, 40D, 50D, 70D, 7D, 5D3, 6D, 1D2) They have all been great camera bodies but it’s very difficult to deny that Canon is being left behind. I’m not just talking specs, I’ve rented the A7II and the A9 with the Metabones adapter. Amazing. For years I justified upgraded bodies within Canon system because I have so much money invested in very good L glass. I can’t justify it any longer. The 6DII was a slap in Canon users faces. It’s a 6D with 80D focusing system. I’m done with Canon. If I’m going to continue to spend my hard earned money on a camera system I’m going with the trailblazer (Sony). I still have my Canon equipment waiting for the A7III to come out. I’m really looking forward to see what they do with the A7RIII.

No wonder why bro, it's a good decision. My first dslr is 1100D for work. I ever had a6000 for work (for two years), now I'm using D750, because in my place, many clients think that a small mirroless is used by amateurs, but still i can't find dslr that could focus as fast as my a6000

First camera was a canon 6d which was 2 years ago this February coming up. I re cently bought the Sony a7rii this past May after selling my canon 6d. I now have the 35mm 1.4 70-200 2.8 gm 90mm 2.8 macro and I love the Sony system!

Purchasing the 5D Mk IV was one of the toughest/longest decisions I ever made since feature-wise overall I knew I was buying a dated piece of hardware in comparison to the latest Sony offerings. Everything you say is true and I almost switched to the Sony A9. In my case, I went with the 5D Mk IV for several reasons... I already had a full line of "L" lenses, I was already familiar with the Canon ergonomics, I shoot almost exclusively stills in the studio and so far have never shot (or plan to shoot) video with a DSLR.

There were several things I wish the 5D4 had (better full frame 4k codec with no crop, in-body stabilization, lighted buttons, no AA Filter, etc.), which I thought it should have had for that price point to give it some future-proofing. But for what I do, I am not sure anyone could ever see the difference in the final results. I recently saw some master photographers totally stumped in an online interview when trying to guess if certain images were taken with a 100-megapixel Hasselblad or a Canon 5D - they kept guessing Hasselblad, but kept guessing wrong! Unless you are printing massive files, it would be hard to tell even side by side.

No doubt that Canon really let down it's loyal DSLR Pro base with the 5D4 - mainly for the video shortcomings - but I figure by the time if/when I decide to expand into video that the new Canon Full Frame Mirrorless "might" be able to maybe use of all my current Canon lenses. If not, I may switch to Sony for video and continue to use my 5D4 for studio/strobe work. 30-megapixels is a pretty good sweet-spot for what I do and fairly manageable in Capture One and with storage requirements.

My biggest regret is that I doubt the resale will be very good when Canon finally does release a more modern successor - so I may be married to it for a long time.

i did the opposite... started with canon then switched to sony a7r2 then sold that and went back to canon. sony customer support SUCKS! and sony a7r2 was way too slow... bought the 5DiV and been happy as heck with it!

I have ordered the Sony A9 along with some prime lenses this week and looking forward to retire my 3-year-old Canon 70D. Looking forward to witness first-hand and share my experience with the Sony system.

My first camera was canon 70d then 6d and 5dsr. Sold them last year and bought the Sony a7rii. Love it 😊

I agree with your opinions.
Canon is a great camera, and like you, Canon has stuck with me for many many beginning years, but unfortunately I prefer videography and Canon has not been quick enough to catch up with Sony's videoing capabilities. Sony really has just 1 job now, to seal the deal - > flip screen...

1 - It does S log?
2 - how is the af with 24mm/ 35mm/50mm 1.4 sigma art?

I have the 1dx mark ii and considering to change due to portability.
