Is The LG 38WN95C Ultrawide Really Worth It?

Today I review the LG 38WN95c ultra-wide monitor to decide whether or not it was worth it and if I think ultrawide curved monitors are actually any good or if dual monitors or 4k monitors are better. I mainly base my review on productivity, although I touch on ultrawide gaming which this monitor can be used for as well.

Wow! Finally someone doing a proper PPI comparison with Retina! It would have helped if you had a stand for that camera, but it still beats everything out there.

Mine is the older version with a 75Hz refresh rate and it is definitely the best monitor purchase I've ever made. After 3.5 years of heavy usage for work, the size of the monitor is perfect. My only dream upgrade is to have it with an OLED screen.

Extra screen real estate makes me a lot more productive but I work with a lot of spreadsheets so being able to see more rows and columns always helps.

I love this monitor. Had it for about 1.5 years and it is incredibly immersive and helped me move away from the 2 monitor mess. Only criticism is the stand: Although its nicely designed, it takes up far too much real-estate space on the desk so swapped it for a Desky monitor arm.

Got mine today for $1199 at MicroCenter, and I love it. The first one had a bad thunderbolt port. My MB M1Pro was not able to establish a video connection. It kept disconnecting. I went back to MicroCenter and replaced it, and the second one works without issues.

Cheers for the review chief. I see those well worn spitfires in the background!

Good honest review Nick. Great setup btw. FYI - I had a stuck pixel on my monitor, and it actually went away after about 4 weeks, so hopefully fixes itself for you.

Thanks for your good video. This helped me make the purchase decision. I need one and the same monitor for many purposes and this seems to be just right for that. I like your style. Matter-of-fact and thoughtful. P.S. you don't need a jacket inside :D

Really good video, thank you - great presentation. Looking at LG 38WN95CP vs DELL U3824DW, any thoughts?

Thank you for the review. I have learned to embrace the USB type A 1-3ft cable for hard to reach ports. I already know people are going to say "BUT U LOSE SIGNAL INTEGRITY!" and my response is that speeds are just theoretical when talking maximums. You really have to just ask yourself does this transfer at a speed you are happy with? Does it give you access to inserting a thumb drive or a mouse/gamepad dongle? I don't care about losing 100Mb/sec when its transferring at 4Gb/sec. Thats a trade off I'm willing to make for access. Same goes for audio cables. 1ft pigtail extensions and label them.

Hi, nice video. I noticed at @11:05 that you could only choose between 60hz or 75h refresh rate. This monitor is advertised as 144hz both trhugh usbc as also display port. Any words on that?

Hey, thank you for the review! A quick question - the USB C on the back is a thunderbolt port. Can you still charge and connect with the monitor via the usb c? You dont need an extra hdmi or dp to be connected in order to transfer the picture?

Also, what is the refresh rate you are getting on the Monitor when you MBP is connected? Are you getting 144hz? And if so, is that via USB-C?

Thanks!

Great honest review! Were there any other 38's or 40's you considered? I'm thinking this sixe is perfect for me too but agree anything over $1500 aud is too much. I can currently get a used one for around the same as you did but still looking for other options as I also don't think 144hz is really necessary

Just scored one of these for $950 open boxed, but in great pretty much new condition. I had the LG 43" which the size is great, but its crazy heavy at near 40lbs vs 18lb's for this monitor. Hope it's a keeper.

Thanks for the review. Have been looking at alternatives for USB-C vs. TB3. Seemed to have narrowed it down to this monitor. Do you think this is worth the extra $500-600 compared to USB-C connectivity alone?
