Canadian here...and I'm tired of price gouging on pickups. A half-ton truck that used to cost us $45k just 5 short years ago, now starts at $75k. HD models that used to top out around $80k, but now start around $90k. The Chevy Bolt is one of the cheapest EVs, and it starts at $38k...for a subcompact car. The Blazer EV is $65k+, and the base Silverado EV 1WT starts at $80k at the dealerships that I've checked. Even with a 100% tariff, it would be cheaper to buy from a company like BYD. We've spent billions of tax dollars to prop up automakers and protect jobs, only to have them lay off those workers, and give their execs bonuses with the bailout money.

It's time for those companies to pay the piper for not keeping up their end of the bargain at the expense of their workforce, who are also taxpayers, and the rest of Canadians who are being price gouged at every turn when they need reliable and affordable transportation. Maybe BYD can set up shop here and create good paying jobs for those who lost theirs at the hands of North American automakers. As a pro-labor guy, I would welcome BYD opening up facilities here to build and assemble. Canadians get much needed competition in the auto sector to usher in affordability, and new job opportunities open up for people who were abandoned by, or find themselves forced to stay at, current companies.

The companies like to blame labor for the need to jack prices, but the record profits year over year tell a very different story. Those workers are the backbone of those companies, and are not being treated and compensated properly. Perhaps BYD can force them to take care of their workforce at the risk of losing top talent to them. When workers win, the economy wins. When people can afford reliable vehicles, they will buy them. Everyone's tired of the poor value for dollar and awful reliability of domestic vehicles due to poor design and engineering. It's not the assembly work in question, it's the cost cutting in design that creates inherent flaws in components.

So yeah, bring on BYD, Geely, and anyone else who will put foot to ass on vehicle prices and quality here. I'd love to get a Shark, or some other EV truck that could rival or beat the current offerings here at a lower price...especially if it can be built and/or assembled here.

I saw BYD buses here in Alberta, Canada several years ago. They apparently performed very well in our cold climate on short to medium length runs. Eventually, it was decided to purchase a fleet of EV buses from a US company that were complete trash. The company soon went out of business and the buses are collecting dust. It is quite likely that they were purchased due to US political pressure.

Canada has a very robust car manufacturing, design, and parts industry that can be heavily subsidized. As a Canadian I welcome BYD because the car industry in North America has been gouging and needs some competition to kick them in the ass.

Frankly, BYD wouldn't mind to build factories in Canada, especially if it can export to US market from there, just like what BYD is doing in Mexico.

SAM .. I hope you are right..I can't wait this will wake up the CANADIAN industries ..The prices of vehicles in Canada are OUTRAGEOUS as a MIDDLE class income can't afford to purchase a NEW vehicle ..

As a Chinese Canadian, and early adoptor of EVs (since 2017), I welcome this news. It's brilliant move by BYD to start limited import use as Uber vehicles to show people how great their cars are, and dispell the myth of Chinese EV fire risks. Then slowly, people will demand them, and democratically elected government has to bend to people's will.

Good for Canada. They should also implement direct-to-consumer sales model, like Tesla's. Legacy automakers and dealers must be crapping their pants.

oh, I still remember when the province of Ontario government shelled out money to keep GM plants alive in Canada in 2009...yeah....sigh

Don't worry Sam. I have a brain. I bought a BYD Atto 3 back in 2022 - ordered January 2022 - because of you. You put me on to the Atto 3. Yes, we did have a few glitches with software, one being catastrophic as it bricked the car! But to blame you? How 2024 and how ridiculous. We've been so happy with our BYD apart from the one serious software problem which was immediately put right. Well done and thank you so much for this hot tip over two years ago.

I'm so tired of the sentiment in Canada about EVs. I look around and see the same old cars on the roads. The prices have been too high for the average driver. That's why you don't see many new cars on the roads. We need to do better. Canadians are hard working people and I know we can do better. I hope BYD and others make it to Canada to stir up the auto industry.

Sam, the American opposition to everything Chinese is about power politics. The US sees itself in decline economically and politically and sees China as the risting power. Anything that benefits China is seen as harming the US. You can debate the rationality of this attitude, but that's basically what's happening. China is also scapegoated for supposedly "causing" American industrial decline. Again, an entirely irrational posiiton - the US was in industrial decline long before the "China shock" - but that is the easy narrative that Americans of both major political parties tell their people.

In 2022 Ontario, Canada was the number two automotive producer in the world next to Michigan building over 1.2 million vehicles.

We’re kind of in a sticky situation right now as the government is trying to join in with the US to put a tariff and we need to stop the Chinese tariffs from coming to Canada because we need affordable EVs and currently there expensive

I’m Canadian and I’m excited for the possibility of buying a BYD I’m just not sure how they will come because Canada is sure to follow America 100% tax so they will have to build a plant here. Canada is the ninth largest automotive market in the world so it would be worth building a factory here.
Trump has already said he would be happy to invite any China car company to build a factory in America so it’s coming at some point.

Most Tesla sold in Canada come from China. So I don't see why Byd could not do the same.

A quick Web search would tell you that the Canadian auto industry is worth about $100 billion a year. Your chuckle at the suggestion that there is such a thing as a Canadian auto industry suggests you needed to do a bunch more research before recording the video.

I've been long waiting for the Chinese EVs to be acailable in Canada. Too bad, if Canadian government increases the tarrif, this only means I as a customer has to spend more money. What's the point to apply the tarrif as Canada doesn't even have any own brand? 😢😢

Welcome to Canada, it's a long journey. I hope the first spec would be Seal or Atto.
