Supreme Court Upholds Sub-Categorization Within SCs and STs | Social Justice | Reservation in India

In a landmark 6-1 ruling, the Supreme Court of India has allowed the sub-classification of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) for reservation purposes.
The decision enables states to provide reservations to the less privileged within these groups based on a “rational principle” and empirical evidence.
This ruling overturns the 2004 E.V. Chinnaiah judgment, which held that SCs could not be subdivided as they formed a homogeneous group.

The judgment, supported by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and five other justices, emphasizes the need to identify the "creamy layer" within SCs and STs to ensure that the most deserving individuals benefit from reservation policies.
