Engineers are the unsung heroes of military history, especially so during the Napoleonic Wars.

Napoleon did not want to return to Spain essentially because of the guerrillas. He did not want to fight in the Vendée during the revolutionary wars. These civil wars are complex to settle.

Marshal Lannes is one of my favorite figures of the era. An energetic and charismatic leader, a loyal soldier and friend through and through. However, he had a lot of prescience about his death, his time in Spain, witnessing all the atrocities, changed him. He was certain that this would be his last campaign, and it was. Really unfortunate that he died on the battlefield, but there is no other way that's more fitting for him.

Looking at the Battle of Aspern, as capable as Charles was, in my opinion the main reason for the French defeat was due to Napoleon’s overconfidence; he made the exact same mistake that the Russians made at Friedland, believing that the Austrians would just keep retreating.
In my opinion, it was also over-confidence that made Napoleon - upon seeing the Austrians advancing toward him - decide to fight with his back to the river rather than retreat across it and force them to follow him.

Foot injuries were no joke back then. Without access to antibiotics such wounds could easily become infected, leading to serious illness or worse.

“Nice.”
I can tell that Napoleon has already won you over. Even through a history video, his charisma and magnetism shines through.
There’s just something about people like him and Julius Caesar. I don’t know how to explain it, but what I can say is that people like them don’t come along very often. And when they do, their accomplishments - military, political and economical - could change the world.

11:00 yep sad truth is that austrians/germans in the imperial austrian army mostly made up the officers and higher ranks while the vast majority of the common soldiers were of different ethnicities within the empire. german was required, although to what extent? because commands were always given out in german

This isn't a bad channel. Seems like it should have more attention, especially from us history fans who watch everything history related.

“This is one of the worst battles you’ve had.”
Up to this point…

Napoleon had plenty of time to go to Spain after these battles with Austria and the invasion of Russia in 1812. But he didn’t. Of course he governed France also but yeah.
