First Man (2018) Movie Scene

A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

Neil Armstrong was a completely focused, tightly wrapped person. First Man develops that side of his personality extremely well. The trauma of losing his daughter was an undercurrent in his life as well, and that was brought home. I've seen a lot of space films and documentaries, and this one is the first to really drive home the brain-shattering violence of riding a rocket into space.

buzz aldrin commented on this scene before saying...
"even though i was not on that flight the sound and shaking at lift off and on the way up are a spot on match"

The iconic "BWOOP" sound the Titan II missile makes.

Surrounded by that degree of madness, noise, and violence; yet they sound completely calm, collected, and professional.

Real, actual heroes.

Best launch scene ever. Very little special effects. All from the astronauts’ perspective. Terrific directing.

I had a whole new respect for space after this.

Imagine the balls you had to have to say 'yes, I'll sit in a tin can on top of a ballistic missile and leave the planet'.

There is an older documentary interview here on youtube with Lt. Gen Tom Stafford where he describes riding the Titan II GLV into orbit. From launch to orbit time: five minutes and 35 seconds

Imagine this was your regular passenger air plane lift off.

Don't get me wrong, Apollo 13 is a good and classic movie, but the launch scene in it was well lit and almost seemed enjoyable. In this you really get the feeling they're riding a rocket, in a spacecraft built light and for them to survive and little more.
