I experienced my initial awakening 23 years ago. The "ego death" comes once the person experiencing awakening makes it through Phase 1 or the purgation process, which is "the Dark Night of the Soul". The karma and repressed instincts, emotions, feelings, and complexes from this life are purged and integrated during Phase 1 of Regression- the Dark Night of the Soul. This took me 12 years. Then the person enters the deeper and much more difficult "Dark Night of the Spirit". This is Regression Phase 2. It's not so much the temporal identification with our roles and titles etc, these form an important part of our egoic identity. The problem is when a person identifies exclusively with the outer roles, status, how much money they have etc. During the "ego death" I did not know who I was, where I was, where I am going, etc. This was terrifying. I went to bed in this state and when I woke up the next day, my identity was restored. The mental ego goes through many of these periods as it eventually is integrated with the Soul or Self. It's important to know that yes there is an ego death but it is only so that the person can be reborn as the Soul or Self. Peace.

I always wanted to be a Christian/religious wife. Literally. Bible study on Wednesdays, modest, prayer warrior, clean and righteous home. I waited for that outcome for over 20 years, I even converted to Islam trying to attain it. I got so much flack from people when I told them that wasn't my identity and that is why it all fell apart. I see God so differently now, there is no way I could ever go back to wanting that life. I actually have to stop myself from getting angry when I hear the way organized religion limits and wrongfully represents God.

I'm somewhere in between stage 1 and 2, and the ego finds recognition and validation in your story :-)
What i find most elusive is to find that love within. To love yourself is such a weird concept because i can't really find this "self".
