You should be teaching apprentice motorbike mechanic pal, that was the simplest way I ever seen anyone explain how to do that job,

Hi Del, since 1970 when I got my first motorbike ( Triumph 199cc Tiger Cub) I have used a short length of flat copper bar with one end filed to a chisel edge to remove gasket material from joint faces. I still have that same, but slightly shorter length of copper bar as it has been used a few times over the years. It scrapes the old gasket material off without damaging the aluminium faces. I also used the other blunt end to scrape carbon deposits from piston crowns and combustion chambers. I don't suppose that sort of thing gets done much these days.

Great job Del. I changed my clutch on my xjr at 50 k. I just followed the instructions in the workshop manual. I was surprised how easy it was. Plus I soaked the plates like you overnight.

You made this job look less daunting than I thought Del, with a very easy guide to replace the clutch - enjoyed watching that 👍

Hi Del & Penny, hope you are both keeping well. Excellent video mate, this should help a lot of people . I do the same as you with the cardboard for the bolt pattern and writing on thing so you know when they were changed. Hope your weather is not too bad, nice 29c over this side. Have a great weekend and take care. Cheers from Oz

Hiya Penny and Del. Great video... I haven't change a clutch since I got my very first bike in 1989 - an '83 Yamaha Maxim 400. Looks like the process hasn't changed much although I DID replace all of the soft JIS case bolts with socket head cap screws at the time. Of course, as a callow youth I knew nothing about JIS and rounded out the heads, shortly after which I learned how to use a manual impact driver from my Dad. I still have that impact driver and, for which I am very grateful, I still have dear old Dad! Take care, dear friends. Be well and ride safe!

I rather winced as you scraped off the old gasket with a metal scraper & sharp knife. I always use a plastic scraper harder than the gasket but softer than the aluminium for absolutely zero risk of damaging the mating surfaces. I maybe over precautious but better safe than sorry (OK, I admit I know how clumsy I can be!).

Great how-to video Del. I just did a clutch change on my "new to me" Honda NT 650 Hawk. I noticed during acceleration that the engine felt it was revving a lot faster than the bike was accelerating. I knew I made the right choice in replacing it, as just even trying to get the main nut loose was quite a chore. The clutch basket kept slipping and not allowing the nut to break free. Unfortunately I did not have the "special" Honda basket holding tool, hence the slipping, I had to get a bit of "creative", and was finally able to get the nut freed and get the new clutch installed. Yep, all the difference in the world. I think one of the previous owners probably rode the clutch a bit too much or was just very abusive on it. I did measure the old plates afterward, some were at the limit or just beyond it, some of the metal disk were a bit worn and "shiny" too.

Such meticulous work !!! Both the clutch replacement and the photography. Outstanding work, Del and Penny ! Have you ever tried one of the new-fangeled carbide scrapers ? A little pricey and require a gentle touch (child's play for you Del 😁) but they do a nice job on aluminum or even aluminium. 😊 Since job 1 today was cranking up the new heater I guess you're enjoying the same crummy weather that we are here. Stay warm and safe. Cheers ! ❤👍👍

Another step towards restoring a great roadbike with a legendary engine. It's fun to watch you reaching that goal with each video. May the season start soon, Günter/Nürnberg

Nice work Del. I have only just replaced my ‘93 FJ1200 fibre plates for the first time at 146000kms, they were a bit undersized, but the steel plates were still within spec and warp free so reused them. Probably should have replaced them while everything was apart. As someone said, these Yamaha engines are bulletproof, they just keep going with minimal maintenance. 😀👍 As for the baked on clutch cover gasket at 146000kms, 😫.

Grease?? I’ve never used it like that. My dad used contact cement just on the outside part hold the gasket. ( that’s old school!) that’s interesting! How many miles on the friction plates normally need replacing?? My 86 1100 Honda shadow has 58, 000 miles. I just did clutch seal replacement this winter. Good lesson here!! Just awesome.
