I like how private Joker gave a good reason not to stomp Private Pyle’s guts out.

the way Joker informs the DI with such fear and anxiety actually makes you feel like you’re in the room with them.

Hartman delivers those lines with the most exquisite, quietest seething rage I've ever heard

That is one of the most brutal, evil, and beastly faces in all of fiction.

I don’t think shouting “didn’t your mommy show you any attention as a child” is the best thing to say to someone who is clearly unhinged

Apparently Hartman's actor (who was a real drill instructor) condemned Hartmans actions. Because he didn't recognize Pyle's decent into madness.

Fun fact: It's never good idea to yell and insult a man with a deteriorating mental health who's pointing a gun at you.

Charlene saved Leonard both from getting bullied any further and from getting life in prison for murder. A rifle really is a Marine’s best friend

Shittalking when being pointed by a rifle is not gonna help your chance at survival

Hartman was a hammer and, as such, treated everything as a nail. What he couldn't understand was that if you push some people hard enough, they turn into landmines.

I was in infantry school on a particularly bad day. Mother was bad sick, couldnt go home, raining, freezing. We were on a range and i was waiting my turn staring off into the treeline lost in thought. One of the angriest Drills walked up to me, squatted down, put his hand on my shoulder…”you good?”. Turned me right around having him take the mask off for a second. I’ll always remember that.

This first half of the movie is iconic and a masterpiece. When I first saw this scene it left me traumatized. I couldn’t fathom the mental decline on Pyle, and Hartman being completely unafraid in his final moments. It’s such a perfect scene that caps off that first half of the movie for me and is something that’ll stick with me for the rest of my life.

I see this as a success. He successfully transformed Pyle into a killer.

Hartmans face when joker informs him of the situation is amazing. Just a touch of fear

The instant you thought you had ALL the power and realized you had NONE of it. Best scene of the movie, imo.

Lee Ermey once said that Vincent D'Onofrio was the most talented actor he had ever worked with. IMO, this was Kubrick's masterpiece.

Hartman wanted to make a killer out of Pyle, and he got it
