Oil pulling is simple yet powerful ancient ayurvedic therapy for maintaining oral hygiene. Oil pulling helps to remove harmful bacteria, prevents tooth decay, bad odor, Receding Gums, heals gum diseases & Gingivitis, prevents cavities, plaque, Tartar formation and heals sensitive teeth.
Not only that regular oil pulling helps to detoxify the body.
The Oil pulling routine has 3 steps.
1. Rinse your mouth. Take 1 tablespoon or little more of water in a small glass. To this add a pinch of Himalayan pink salt. You can also use regular salt if you do not have this. Mix this well until the salt dissolves fully in the water. Now rinse off your mouth with this. This will flush out your mouth and prepares it for the next step.
2. Step 2 is Oil pulling with Ayurvedic solution.
This is the most important step. For this we need Sesame oil. You can also use coconut oil or olive oil if you don’t have Sesame oil. Take 2 tablespoons of sesame oil in a mortar & pestle system. Toss in a quarter teaspoon of Cloves into this. Now crush it gently. Clove and sesame oil combination works efficiently for all teeth and gum diseases. Now strain this oil. You can make this sesame clove oil in large amount and store it.
Now from here there are two ways we can use this oil for oil pulling.
2.1. Kavala (Swishing) – In this method, a tablespoon of this prepared oil is taken. To this you can optionally add 1 teaspoon of water. This helps to ease the oil pulling for beginners without paining the jaws.
Now take this liquid into the mouth and start swishing. Gently swish and roll the oil b/w teeth and gums just like mouthwash for about 10 to 15 minutes. While swishing, if you experience pain in jaws, take a little gap and again continue swishing. This swishing sweeps away the bacteria and plaque and dissolves it into the oil. After swishing for 15 minutes, spit out the liquid. Do not swallow it. If done properly, you will notice a white milky liquid when you spit it out.
2.2. Gandusha – In this method, we take more than 2 tablespoons of this oil into the mouth. And we just hold it for about 10 minutes. You will not swish or move around the oil. Just hold it in the mouth. Soon, you will notice lot of saliva being generated. You may slightly move the oil if needed.
After 10 minutes, spit out the liquid.
3. Turmeric Gel
Take a 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric (Organic turmeric is preferred). Add equal amount of water, to make it thick paste like this. Make sure the consistency is thick like a paste. With the help of fingers, just gently apply this on your gums and teeth going in a circular motion. Wait for 1 minute and rinse off your mouth with fresh water. Turmeric has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can heal gum infections and tooth decay.
