The part of the myth where the Male Kami goes to the underworld to retreave the female Kami is erily similar to the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurdice. Female dies, man heartbroken travels to the underworld to get her back. Man is told to not look back at his wife before leaving the underworld. Both men end up disobeying the orders, and because they look back they forever lose their loved one. And are trapped from ever returning to the underworld in their mortal lives. There's definitely some cultural differences in the story, but it's crazy how similar these two myths are.

Funny video, Linfamy! As a Shintoist, please allow me to say one thing, Izanagi-no-Okami did not run away because he saw Izanami-no-Okami "ugly". He ran away after he saw the Yakusa-no-Ikazuchi-gami which were the 8 terrifying looking lightning gods of Yomi-no-Kuni. It does not say anywhere in the Kojiki that he abandoned his wife based on her looks.

I find it so interesting that many cultures share similarities, even thought they are so far apart geographically. The "don't look at me" in the Underworld part is also in the Greek mythology with Orpheas amd Euridice.
