While I understand this approach, SHM really clicked for me when we worked out the acceleration equation from a force diagram, then solved it as a 2nd order D.E. (which I'm guessing isn't part of their syllabus).

Amazing teaching, the amplitude is missing in the wave equation. I perceived it's a unit, i.e 1
