I agree that iPad is more of a companion device not a replacement. I agree paying 1500 dollars for iPad Pro is stupid. But I think Austin is in a tech bubble of what iPad use case really is. Being able to edit, write, take notes, and draw with the iPad is still the best and necessary for some people’s work. Until apple makes a 2 in 1 touchscreen computer (which they probably won’t), ipad is still vital. iPad is still the best companion device

I've wanted an iPad mini for years now. I've also been broke for years now.

The Pros need to have some sort of “Dex” mode to give you a MacOS type experience. They definitely need to streamline the lineup.

The Mini is definitely a good companion device. It's perfect for the typical personal area network. It's not trying to be anything it isn't. More of this form factor, please. And yes, spring for cellular. Absolutely.

I have used the iPad Pro as my main computer for 5 years and I haven’t run into a website that doesn’t work on it for at least 6 or 7 years. I sold my Mac 5 years ago because I prefer the iPad for music production. I started using GarageBand and some features have limitations compared to other programs on the Mac however the tradeoff is worth it for touch and the portability.

Ok this subject I have to comment on. I’ve been working in tech support for years and have worked with so many older people. They think iPads are a laptop replacement. Like Austin said it isn’t. So Austin is right. People think iPads are replacements for laptops and when they go to certain sites they run into issues. Nothing to do with being a tech enthusiast. I feel like it’s quite the opposite. People who are trying to make things convenient and easy by just using an iPad are the ones who suffer because they don’t realize it just doesn’t cut it and just is not a true replacement for the laptop.

I definitely can’t use an iPad as my primary device, but I love both my 12.9” Pro and Mini. Great companion devices, love using them for sidecar, or controlling them with my MacBook. I feel like my toolkit would be incomplete without them. I haven’t had any issue with not having cellular on them — It’s pretty seamless to connect to the hotspot on my phone, which is nice

I haven’t owned a laptop or pc since 2017 and have only used iPads as my computer, outside of work which requires I use a laptop, in that time frame.

The iPad can work as a perfectly fine computer replacement, it just doesn’t work for people in the tech space who do a lot more with their computers than normal people.

My iPad has Microsoft Office, can download movies, browse the internet, and works with filing taxes. That is all I need it for.

Edit: I primarily used an iPad Pro 10.5 from 2017 until a month ago when I updated to the most recent (as of September, 2023) IPad Air. I updated it solely because it was on sale and had the M1 in it.

The main magic off the iPad is when it’s used naked - no keyboard, pencil or for that matter a case! It’s just an amazing display that’s light and direct. Apple never intended the iPad to replace a mac, it’s a quality of life improvement in certain categories.
I love using my iPad 11 inch - it’s the ideal weight, the multitasking is on point and it’s fast. Love reading, watching content and occasionally drawing and note taking on it. I was excited when they introduced the Magic Keyboard but soon realised that it’s stripes away the main essence of the iPad. Honestly I feel the only iPad that should be allowed to have a keyboard is the largest model.
The 11 inch is just perfect! Is synonyms to burger melting in your mouth expect here it’s the iPad in your hands
Its fundamentals sound and as years go by can morph into anything your life needs - for being a notebook/sketch book, amazing media player, best possible mobile gaming machine to best kindle there can be, best place to browse your photo albums and music. It’s just an amazing screen- first appreciate that. It’s a quality of life improvement and now a days it’s worth the cost since so much of our lives are digital. Your wrist, your eyes and your back perhaps will appreciate it.

Next, it’s extremely compatible with your Mac. This is new and is still work in progress. There is a certain movement in freestyle creative apps are are starting to rise- a scrap book kind of aesthetic- that’s iPads forte and post processing can then be done on the Mac.

I’ve also noticed that each size of iPad has a certain implicit multitasking gestures that are suited best for each respectively while still being available in all. I think somebody need to dwell into that more. The 12.9 is not the best iPad anymore in my opinion it’s the 11 inch pro - extreme light, fast and nimble

I like that the iPad is modular and when you don't need or want a keyboard you can carry it around to play games, read, post on social and use a web browser. I have not run into any issues with the browser or browsers on the iPad and websites. You have to understand what you want to do and buy the correct device. iPads are great for most tasks even video and photo editing and have great accessories and modularity. A great replacement for most people.

i just traded my M2 12.9 iPad Pro to someone who was selling their MacBook Air M2 and i have no regrets, the iPad was great and fun at times but only when i would randomly remember i had it and bring it out from under my bed were it was just collecting dust… I do alot of video editing and photo editing and i got really happy when they finally brought out davinci to the iPad but it had a lot of flaws starting off with it not working most of the time and crashing and losing my videos (i even went to settings to change my ram usage and set it to max but it didn’t help) but with this MacBook which is the same processor on the ipad its just completely different, i could actually edit videos and use crazy nodes and color grades and still export in less than 20 seconds! (my videos are usually less than 10 second reels) but all that said… do your research before buying something and make sure you need that product because theyre hella pricey

I know it's somewhat niche but the release of Logic Pro for iPad was what sold me on an 11' Pro, having a portable musical "sketchbook" of sorts is an absolute game changer

Mine is great for light computing tasks when I'm on the go or in another part of my house other than my office, where I use a Mac Mini. It's my bedroom tv, my preferred reading device, and truly excels at things like browsing and media consumption. I agree that it's a great companion device. I don't try to fully replace my Mac with it, but it slots in nicely between my iPhone and my Mac.

From the perspective of a student, an Ipad is great as a primary device. Since most of what you do is in a browser and the respective apps, (which works fine, quite nice not to be only in a browser tbh) while having super low friction in terms of being able to both write and type notes, annotate as well as write essays is great. At the end of the day, though, it’s just super easy and more importantly fun to use, with the versatility calling back to the low friction and fun to use aspect. As an all in one device that matches with your iphone well, honestly i’ve not seen an issue really yet 🤷‍♂️

Should use it with a VOIP. No need for a iPhone and smartphone anymore when your tablet can connect cellular data

I love the Mini - I have a little mount for it and it's just underneath my main monitor so I can watch YouTube and control my lights and use it as a display monitor for my camera. I have considered getting a larger one, but the mini is just perfect.

Honestly I’ve been struggling so much to decide which iPad to buy for weeks. I was leaning towards an iPad Mini already, and this just confirmed what I wanted. Thanks guys!

Another idea: Just give MacOS to the iPad pros.

Wasn't expecting the "LUDA!". Was one of those moments where I spit my water out at my screen. Thanks. Was quite funny
