As someone who's surfed for over 20yrs and has all of this down, I have to add one important tip. Once you can catch waves, STAY NEAR THE TOP, particularly when surfing smaller waves! The higher you are on an unbroken wave, the more speed you'll be able to generate.

It's amazing how much looking down the line affects whether you catch or don't catch a wave. I always used to look straight ahead while paddling at an angle and often either end up spinning straight off while popping up, or going straight ahead and completely missing the wave. As soon as I started looking down the line, everything fell into place - that natural inclination to push down on the inside rail to turn the board across the wave face came naturally, and because my head was facing in the direction the board was moving, my body ended up in the correct orientation without spinning off because my head was going in one direction and the board the other.
Tips like those in this video save you a huge amount of time by pointing out things you probably wouldn't normally think of, and have a huge impact on whether you're successful or not.

I think taking off at an angle with my hands pushing my inside rail into the wave helps me as well because I surf a flatter board and it helps to fit me into the curve of the wave while still allowing me to use a flatter board that helps me paddle faster. Since the rail's curve helps to match the wave's shape not just the rocker.

Hi Kales, what about basic principles to catch a barrel. I struggle a lot with finding the right spot on the wave and positioning the board properly. Cheers

Frick yes! I love these lessons. I currently live in the Midwest of the USA- meaning I live in an oceanless void 🙄 but I’m making plans to move to Australia and live with some family members in the next few years, and I can’t wait to start taking action on what I’m learning here and start living the dream

I was finally able to pump and gain speed on a wave the other day after years of trying and hours of YouTube. What a feeling!! The wave I surf is a really fast reef break and I found that on a lot of my takeoffs I was just going straight to the bottom of the wave and losing all my speed. I had to angle the takeoff and stay high from the start. Keep at it! The feeling is really worth the effort! Thanks for the great videos.

A great and mabye short video would be "The right way to paddle". I've seen many not professional surfers paddling with their arms straight, while I'v seen professional surfers lifting their elbows while paddling.

Hi Kale, another excellent video. Look to where you want to go is critical.I noticed at the 9.27 mark when your man pops up he has his back knee bent on the board with the front leg in position & then pushes up. That’s ok IMO as it’s very similar to the chicken wing pop up I use due to age and back knee issues. My point being you need to practice on land to train your muscle memory because it’s a split second motion in the ocean. Regards Phil

Hi Kale. I’m Ming, a rookie surfer from Taiwan (hope you know where Taiwan is. )
Firstly, my English is so poor hope you can understand what I like to say.
I love your video so much and I think this video is one of the best surfing videos on YouTube.
Could you please let me put some Chinese subtitle on your video, cus I really hope to share this video with those surfers who can’t speak English.
Maybe the process of translation will take me lots of time. But I will do my best. And I’m appreciated you can grant my request.
Best regards
.

Awesome tutorial! Great detailed technical breakdown of Carrisa Moore's? form and step by step process. As an OS site and snow boarder, I want to learn how to ride the ocean. Thanks for all the beginner videos. Stay stoked!

Fingers crossed I can get out this weekend and put more of this in to action. You guys produce excellent videos. Production standards are high, the co tent is good and pitched at the rich level (for me!) and the vibe is great. Thanks!
