Before the fun song, Get Your Kicks On Route 66, this highway was called Bloody 66. That is why it was a replaced. As the first highway, many lessons were learned to hard way in highway design. Just so you know those are ghosts you see along the way. RIP.

My wife and I did this trip about 10 years ago and are scheduled to do it again in mid-July. We then spend a week in California. Looking forward to it.

The whole road is not there anymore, so you will have to choose which parts to visit. For instance in Illinois most of it was made into frontage roads that start and stop at the overpasses on I-55. Google maps shows many of the original parts that still exist. My favorite place is the beautifully maintained Conoco tower gas station in Shamrock. TX. I drove on the original road as a child in the 1940s, as an adult in the early 1970s, and much of it as retro touring in the 1990s.

The pops stand was definitely fun for the soda and I wish I had gotten the chance to visit the ghost town.
