One tip: If you want to create maps, check out "Materialize"...

A small addition to help new people: You can use a free piece of software called Materialize to make maps. So you can put your image texture in it, then make high, ao and normal, save them and import them into blender to give your model a bit of additional realism. It is the one I used before I got into procedural texturing, I always hated that part of the process so I automatized it, now I just unwrap everything and bake :)

i didn't know you could make a normal map in gimp, thats really good to know. when doing the pages i think using a bump node with the starting image and a color ramp provides a better look than the normal map

I'm thinking maybe it would be easier to set the texture prior to beveling the model... fewer loops/faces to select. Maybe not (could just be my inexperience). Also -- I didn't realize Gimp would output a normal texture like that (good tip)! I'm still waiting for Gimp to work on my machine (Mac). I have the 'fonts' problem with Gimp, where it will not show any form of readable text in the menu system or dialog boxes (not sure why). If effects some people, but not most. Thanks for the video -- really enjoyed it.

Blender seems to be rather bad in working with UVs.
