Michael Bay's Transformers movies may have never been pushing storytelling boundaries, but the entry that turned the franchise into absolute unwatchable garbage is 2014's Transformers: Age of Extinction starring Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci and Nicola Peltz. This is also the movie where Michael Bay's blockbuster career took a turn to the worse, as he followed up with 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight and 2020's 6 Underground, both unwatchable movies. In a weird way, the success of the Transformers franchise ruined Michael Bay as a director, and Age of Extinction marks the spot where that happened in full. And so in today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's look at Michael Bay's main faults as a director and how those faults manifest in Age of Extinction. The thing that’s sad, is that Lockdown is a genuinely great antagonist.

bee saving sam, and being best friends with him, in general, makes so much sense, they have such a big connection. Optimus is only really friends with Kade because he didn't sell them out, which is barely valid because let's be honest no one would give away a transformer.

Even though it’s overused, the CGI of the transformations has always been really good with all of the moving parts. It looks like the transformer could actually turn into the car, and then this movie just decides to go with weird cg cube clouds for basically all of the new characters

Throughout the entire movie I was waiting for the inevitable scene where Cade builds the dinobots. He is an inventor and we see a giant metal t rex skeleton in the beginning, it seemed so obvious. His character ark was wanting to make something that matters, and he never does?!?!?!

Lockdown had it all: A Spaceship, a Badass name, his Wolves, and a FUCKIN BADASS THEME SONG. So, WHY DID BAY THROW HIM OFF A CLIFF?!

I would say that while Optimus' and Cade's relationship is hollow and underdeveloped, Optimus choosing to help Cade says a lot about Optimus as a character. I'm of the opinion that through all the chaos of the franchise, Optimus somehow ended up with a pretty consistent and solid character arc spanning all the movies.
