Yes. This is authentic. I lived in Volos, Greece for 5 months. Literally every gyro spot i went to makes it with fries. And if you want they’ll put ketchup on it too.

I travel to Greece a lot and I've never seen gyro meat like this. This looks like it was made from ground beef. In Greece, they put chicken and pork gyros on two different skewers that are next to each other. And they are pieces of stacked meat, not made from minced meat as shown in the video.

This is called Chicago style gyro invented in the 1960's by a Greek immigrant Chicago restaurant owner. It is the most common Greek gyro you will get when ordering in the U.S. It is not authentic Greek gyro.

My kids used to go to a Greek orthodox school, who used to do days specific to Greek celebrations. Whilst chips were normal in them, this type of meat was not normal. Usually pork or chicken.

Pretty standard to what most Greek places in the US would serve. It'd be better if he grilled the meat a bit after slicing it IMO. The ones with whole lamb slices stacked instead of the processed cone (see also shawarma) are on another level though.
