South African here - I could never understand why people have such lavish weddings. When my wife and I got married, we signed the paperwork at Home Affairs, and went camping in a forest with friends for the weekend. We sat around playing guitar around a bonfire, camped on the edge of a canyon overlooking the valley. It cost us nothing. Rather put that money towards a car, a house or a business in my opinion.

This wedding episode especially makes me so happy about how I planned my wedding. We invited 40 people for Thanksgiving Dinner. We didn't tell anyone that we were getting married so it was a surprise wedding. As everyone sat down to eat our friend who is also a Reverend told everyone he'd like to share an ancient pagan thanksgiving custom. He needed 2 volunteers. My husband and I got up and we started the wedding with no one actually getting it until we were halfway through the ceremony. It was fun and beautiful. No one had to worry about fancy clothes, gifts, endless parties, anything really.

I remember going to one of my Girl Scout’s homes, and her mom showed me a cherished Bible. In it, was her family tree. I looked at it, unable to speak. Then she said, “Yeah… my family tree has no branches.” I couldn’t say a single word, but it answered a LOT of questions! 🤣🤣🤣
