Year of Linux desktop wont happen until Windows 7 Extended Support ends in 2020.
2020 is when i think lot of people around the world will start switching to Linux.

The reason I use Linux, is because it doesn't eat my resources as much as Windows does. I can have any amount of programs and not worry about them slowing down my system.

With over 30 desktop environments currently available I think the choice of desktop for a new user is overwhelming - ergo turning a positive into a negative

Hello STL ! LTS vs Rolling release might be confusing. You can have an LTS kernel on a rolling release. I prefer to say fixed cycle release vs rolling release. You can decide to stay with a particular version of a package on a rolling release by excluding it from the updates. And you can choose the latest kernel while on an LTS distro. One very important reason is economical. Plenty of people don't have the money to buy a new computer and they had for instance XP with 512MB. There are a lot of free Linux distributions for them: antiX, SliTaz, Tiny Core, DSL, Puppy Linux, Knoppix. Even for people having 1GB of RAM these distros are great and you can add some other like Lubuntu, LXLE, Salent OS and so on ... You can also transform an old computer into a server and use terminal apps. Try to do that with Windows Server 2012 R2 for instance.
Best regards,
Serge

i agree with you but over the years Linux has more and more proprietary software in it, just an observation here.Secondly some of the newer distros Richard Stahlman must be laughing and shaking his head off.

5:50 - Actualy, you can!
and
But that's not the same as changing your Desktop Environment in Linux. It's more like customising it.

I do not watch often. 3 years plus into linux and a recent foray into win 10. Widows= P in the A. Feren Os has an option that will fool most win users.

Let me play the devil's advocate for a moment...

Top 5 reasons NOT to run Linux

1 and 2 ) You know why Mac and Windows have less choices in desktop environnements and apperances? So you spend more time working than tweaking. Yeah, that's right. For some people, a computer is not something to play with, but something they actually do real work with.
3 and 4 ) Mac and Windows are both stable rolling release models, with all the latest drivers and softwares. No need to wait to get the latest Firefox or LibreOffice. Plus, you get applications that are not available in Linux, such as Adobe, Office, games, etc. and no compatibilty problems with hardware, printers, etc.
5 ) The minute you get on the web, your privavcy is like gone and your security is at risk, whatever OS you're running. Unless you run a particular OS like Kali or Tails, and even then, it's not a 100% sure.
