Netflix's Mary Movie is NOT What I Expected

I wasn't even going to give this movie a second thought. But when I saw that Joel Osteen produced it, I couldn't help myself. So, what does a Christmas movie about Mary look like that's been produced by Joel Osteen? How bad could it be?

I went in looking for a biblical movie about Mary and Jesus.

I left with an unbiblical over the top action thriller. Even the horse running through the CGI flames of fire looked confused.

"Biblical Christianity will never be popular, and popular Christianity will never be Biblical." That right there. I wish more Christians got that. And I love that you tied that in with the movie by pointing out the purpose of the movie - or what the purpose should be/should have been.

When I heard the audio preview for this movie and the angel said, "Mary, you will give birth to a son, " and she said, "that's not possible, " I knew there was something weird about that. Mary never says, "that's not possible". She never doubted that what the angel said was true. She asked, "how can this be?" which is much different from calling the miraculous conception impossible.

My opinion of Joel Olsteen has quickly gone from "he's a little weird, but not a real problem" to "this guy is intentionally misleading people for personal benefit". Thanks to in-depth videos like this and Pastor Mike. I love this long format analysis!!

It seemed to my husband and I that there was a pointed effort for a shift from the focus being Jesus to the focus onto Mary.
In the Bible there are characters and events surrounding Jesus, but the focus is always the Holy Spirit, Jesus and the Father.
This movie attempted to shift the point or focus to Mary.
The real Mary, would have none of that. Just as Gabriel insisted on not being the “focus” or worshipped, neither would have Mary, or Peter, or John, Paul, etc.

It was COMPLETELY devoid of ALL miracles except the appearance of Gabriel. No mention that Jesus was birthed by The Holy Spirit. No appearance of the angles to the shepherds, NO warnings through dreams by God to Joseph or the wise men and they never made it to Egypt. Mary just decided to return. Where did that inspiration come from? The strength in herself??

Catholics agree this movie is not accurate or biblical, we have no idea where this strange synopsis story came from but apparently it was from JO? Even if it was done just for "entertainment" its too unsettling to recommend or enjoy. We have a special place for mother Mary in our hearts. Really wish they had done a better job with this... So glad I didn't waste my time watching this.

The moment I saw that Netflix had made a movie about Mary. I ignored it. I already knew the movie would be misleading and disrespectful to God and the true scriptures, so I’m not gonna piss myself off by watching it.

What a shame. I was listening to Mary's Song Breath of Heaven yesterday. If only they had crafted a story that followed the Bible but expanded on Mary and Joseph and how they were faithful despite their uncertainty of what the future would hold. It could emphasize how God continually chooses the most unlikely people who respond with faith despite feeling they cannot carry that load. Mary and Joseph maintaining faith despite fear and doubt would have been very powerful.

I love how you term Gabriel “Creepy Gabriel” I think they were trying so hard to make it like mysterious and holy and they failed spectacularly. The whole thing was was cringe.
