I can still se why it apears so often in anime and manga, the minimalist aesthetic is quite nice.

I like that you're chill about misunderstanding. And explain and teach rather than speak down to people

it's easy to understand why. the shirasaya does look like a very cool sword too!

I’m glad that my first exposure to the shirasaya was Rurouni Kenshin. They made it really clear that it was for blade-preserving purposes.

In the show "Rurouni Kenshin" there was an episode where he used a blade that was sheathed like that and he defeated the enemy but broke the hilt in the process. The son of the man that forged the blade then attached the hilt of his broken sword to it so that he would have a usable sword.

Reminds me of when one was used in Ruroni Kenshin. It was holding a famous blade that needed to be used in an emergency and the handle shattered after the first, luckily the only needed, strike.

“Oh, this sword shaped piece of wood that I’m carrying, officer? It’s just a piece of firewood for my poor mother….”

I think a famous fighting game character uses one of these! His name is Johnny and he appears in the Guilty Gear series of games, and his entire character is the "rule of cool", so he's doing insane stuff with his sword!

The animators love this thing because it’s so easy to draw.

Kind of like preserving a batch of rifles in straw and wax keeps the expensive bits like rifling from wasting away and degrading.

My old martial arts instructors had one of these on their wall, I always wondered about it. Had a bronze plate with words on it. I wonder if this is what that was!

Here is where I like the shirasaya. Without the features, tsuba, sageo, tsuka menuki etc.

I always believed it was perfect for quick draw techniques.

The less features the faster the draw.

Magnolia is the state flower of the US state I was born in. Beautiful tree, amazingly fragrant flowers.
