CLOSE CALL!! Flying into Wake Turbulence on short final!

Apologies on the reupload - I deleted this video by accident sorting through the video manager...

Info: This was back in 2012 during my pre-solo PPL days when we were in the circuit practicing landings at John Wayne in the Piper PA28 Archer III. I failed to note the landing traffic (B738WL) on the parallel runway, which resulted in me flying into its wake turbulence on very short final. What an experience! Scary but a good lesson learnt. If you want to know what it felt like; picture an invisible force pulling an aircraft from your control!!

I wouldn't have needed a seat belt. My assignment would have chewed a hole through the seat!
Seriously, good response. Add power, abort landing, and go-around. What's the #1 rule in flying any plane? FLY THE PLANE.

They don't say "caution" for nothing...

Cool shot! May I feature this wake turbulence encounter in one of my next episodes? Of course with a link back to your original video. All the best to you!

I planespot regularly at KSNA, once i saw a Beechcraft Bonanza encounter wake turbulence from a landing A300. He struck his right wing on 20R but luckily didn't crash off the side of the runway. It's avoid wake turbulence!

Luckily I never hit any serious wake turbulence. I did my flying at a class D with lots of corporate jet traffic but nothing larger than a very rare A320.

Always used an abundance of caution. Land beyond their touch down point and ready to go around. When advised of wake turbulence on take off, if I couldn't get an immediate turn, then take the delay.

Happened to me before touchdown two weeks ago also at SNA same runway but at touchdown. The aircraft leaned to the right then the left wing dropped and the stall horn went off. I was able to control it and land it safely for a touch and go again.

I was on final on a straight in approach in a Cessna 172. A Cessna Caravan passed in front of me cleared to land in the circuit. I bounced around but cleared the turbulence as i descended.
Years ago at Winnipeg International Airport a flight instructor with a student was in a Beech 95 Travel Air. Its a twin. To get your multi engine you have to simulate an engine failure which they were doing. They were at 100 mph simulating the engine failure when the landing gear went down bringing the air speed down to less than the minimum flight control speed of 80. In addition they were following an Airbus 320 in light wind conditions. Their touchdown point would have put them behind the 320s touchdown point.
The combination of low speed, a tendency of that type of aircraft to stall or spin below 80, following a 320 in light wind conditions which did not let the turbulence dissipate plus their approach too low behind the 320s touchdown, spun the Beech around and pancaked it flat 2 NM short of runway 18 killing both occupants.
Wake turbulence and prop and jet wash caution cannot be emphasized enough. A 747 wake can easily flip over and nose in even a goodsized twin.

Had my first experience with wake turbulence flying into ELP today and it was super humbling. Learned a lot about myself and how to handle a wing drop that low.

That's exactly where and how the president of In N Out at the time died in a plane crash. On final approach into SNA.

Well done. Could you have recovered and landed? Probably, but going around is always safer...

I had my last 6 hours cross country flight and on my way back to the airport experienced none stop turbulence and its not fun at all had to go around at my first attempt then landed safely after thank god 😅😅😅🙏🏼

Happened today to me during short final at KBFI. Had to do almost a full deflection to the left, pretty wild.

Hi Luke, I am an ATCO in the U.K. and I'm currently putting together some info and wake turbulence and Vortices for the unit. Could you tell me what aerodrome this was and the mean wind speed and direction if you remember it?

Thats why you dont fly below the path of a bigger plane. lack of knowledge is a serious killer
