FYI, I'm down to be on with Biermann. Appreciate the shout-outs.

Essentially Lutherans have the Augustinian understanding of election. The elect are those that persevere to the end, not necessarily everyone who is saved. Because of their view of the sacraments. This is why they may sound reformed to people who are thinking in Calvinist/Arminian categories, but they aren't actually

Resident German Lutheran here: Tis a wundervoll show! Here in Germany we were taught the Lutheran view of soteriology is very similar to St. Athanasius, i.e. viewing soteriology as applied Christology. Thank you and God bless!

New sub here (and a new Christian)... This channel is full of answers to so many of my questions. Love it. Thank you for doing this!

Also would be so dope if you guys got Tim Stratton on to discuss Molinism and Monergism, cause I think his version of Molinism actually resolves a lot of the threads in Lutheranism regarding Sovereignty and free will, and because Tim is dope

I was baptized in the Lutheran Church as an infant but didn’t grow up Lutheran, or Christian. I currently attend a PCA Church, as a born again Christian. I like this guy. Flames EP brought me here. Lol. I love Jordan B Cooper by the way. I watch his stuff all the time. But I’m trying to follow this type of theology and it seems very inconsistent. It’s a blend between synergism and monergism.

I also love listening to your show but I don’t think I’ve ever come away so confused from a program. I’m glad I got to hear the Lutheran position on salvation. Thank you.

Hey guys I'm a Classical Arminian i would say Prevenient Grace is both Efficient an Effectual in to bring about the gift of repentance an faith Which can still be rejected. Classical Arminianism doesn't believe in free will but in Freed will only done by the work of the holy spirit/Monergistic

Y'all this is great, this is like my millionth comment but yeah I think doing a series on baptism would be great.

Lutheran (Joel and Jordan), then do Reformed/Presbyterian (Ligon Duncan), then do Eastern Orthodox (Frederica!!!), throw on a Roman Catholic (Matt Fradd, he's great ), and then do the Baptist position with Joel Webbon (cause he's dope)

Would it be possible to see a sequel to this interview with Dr. Biermann?

Irresistible/Efficacious Grace misrepresented at 32:48.
Trusting is not me working, it is a gift and work of God, but it is not a work of me.

Can you please put the videos up of the patristics on the gifts of the spirit?

Also add they only believe in single election (to salvation) (like the Anglicans) and would reject election/unconditional predestination to damnation. For a similar view it would be Calvinist sublapsarianism

Enjoying the conversation on soteriplogy, however, there is another aspect to salvation that seems to be overlooked in the conversation, and that is *positional* election in Christ, which may help in the *limited atonement* controversy ! (Definately *election* to apostleship is *limited* and closed to the 12 in the first century AD and are all Jewish) Revelation 21:14, matthew 15:24

Not all are Apolstles !
Matthew 20:21-28, 1 Corinthians 12:13-31, revelation 22:17

I'm non denominational!
Shalom in Christ🙏👍🏻

I love biermann’s work on vocation and two kingdoms, but soteriologically speaking this is the most Calvinistic Lutheran I’ve ever heard of. Of course Lutherans aren’t a monolith but I’ve never heard of them accepting “total depravity” as opposed to emphasizing the bondage of the will which IS different. But it seems to me like he just doesn’t k ow enough about the reformed positions to k ow exactly where he disagrees?

I think Jordan Cooper explains this better. Biermann does not seem to represent the Lutheran view of free will. The bondage of the will has to do with spiritual life not with other free choices people do.

The problem is, most of you see Baptism as some human ritual and that’s all. However, the Word and Name of God is there and is applied to the person baptized... and it remains on them. It’s not just one moment in time and it’s God’s work, not human. It’s done in His Name.

The Name remains on the person Baptized... and remains even if you get knocked out and forget what the Gospel is. Even if you become an invalid, the Name and Word of God is upon you.

So, infants receive the Word and Name of God and the souls of infants are not immune to the Holy Spirit. Look at John the Baptist in the womb who was leaping with joy in the presence of the Word without even seeing Him.

The early church baptized infants and there was no debate about it. Jews also immersed their infants (mikvah) as an initiation rite to be considered Jewish.

When created in the image of God, we were given the freedom to choose/freewill as God has. If we didn't have freewill we wouldn't be able to make the choice to believe in Jesus, or not. It is the freedom of freewill to choose to believe in Jesus that makes that choice valuable. Without the freewill to make that choice it becomes valueless - just a programmed action - loveless.

Fundagelicals believe in salvation by works -- "committing my life to Christ, " "letting Jesus into my heart, " "making a decision, " and answering an altar call -- me crossing the bridge of the cross -- is all a work. They definitely believe in assurance by works, too: you have no assurance unless you follow the rules well. There are lots of irony here.
