Qui Gon was arguably the greatest Jedi of his age. He did what he thought was right and followed his own conscience rather than the rigid dogma and rulings of the Jedi council, who had become far too politicized and beholden to the Senate even in his day.

He was the only person who realized the Sith had returned over a decade before anyone else, and tried to warn the Jedi council, but they would not listen and arguably sent him to his death. George Lucas and others have suggested that if he survived to train and mentor Anakin he would not have fallen to the Dark Side.
