Periodontal Probing

Ever heard the phrase, “I’m going to check your pockets.” Well, today, I am explaining what and why we perform periodontal probing.

This is the one simple procedure to check how healthy your mouth is. It is typically done once a year, but can be done twice. It is one of he first procedures done when you are a new patient to an office. This determines if you have gingivitis or periodontitis.

Any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. 😷🦷

Thank you for such a clear and direct explainer of dental health. I really wish I had this video when I was younger to understand the importance of flossing.

Ha ha ‘why am I smiling, it’s not funny’ 🤣
I love your passion for bleeding gums. So I started using a water flosser since watching your channel. And I’ve been probed, deepest was a 5mm at the very back of the mouth, no bleeding. How deep below the gum line can a water flossing clean? I’ll will obviously be going back to the hygienist often now. X

I am so happy I have found your videos. I was at my dentist practice for many years and they never mentioned periodontitis to me, despite going for regular cleanings and appointments. I recently changed over to a different dental practice, and they have found that I have periodontitis (explains the bad breath I have suffered with for 3 years!) In your opinion would you say that this is negligence from my first dental practice?

Great video!! Question: I had some 5’s and lots of bleeding 6 months ago- I started using a water flosser daily and 3 months ago my worst numbers were 4’s and almost no bleeding - can my gums improve more? Can I get to 3’s or less? Your water flossing video really helped me!! I need to watch again but I wonder, do I want to target my water stream from the flosser DOWN into the gums? I feel like that could force food and bacteria down deeper… thanks again!! Very very helpful!! You’re very likable 😊🌸🌺☘️

I wish I found you earlier!! My dentist did some probing and all my teeth were maximum of 2mm except one which is 5mm.

Is this normal? Hygienist said she’s happy with the health of my gums but she was unsure why only one tooth had a 5mm pocket! Thank you!!!

The Dentist recommends a deep clean. I have pain in one upper middle tooth on and off for months. X rays are normal. Antibiotics took away pain 99% waiting for second opinion. Dentist mentioned maybe a root canal. Any suggestions?

So I have a few questions. I had a scaling done in 2018 after being diagnosed with gingivitis. And they never explained any sort of gingivitis specific followup plan besides prescription toothpaste. Then I moved to a different state and went to a dentist who just said everything looked fine. I had been told previously I would need a crown soon and had a cavity but then this guy told me everything was fine even though I was literally asking for something to be wrong. And then he told me now that I'm in my 30s I should just expect teeth to deteriorate and not get cavities filled. WTF. I just told myself it must have been the miracle toothpaste. THEN I go to a new dentist a few months ago and they measure and now I have a 6mm pocket on one side of one tooth. And they find the cavity and mention the crown. They also explain that after that initial scaling, I should have gone back and had it done in a series so that the pockets would have had a proper chance to reattach by being routinely cleaned out. That dentist was awesome. But unfortunately I moved again! Before accomplishing anything. And I am now in Austin and looking for a new Dentist. Does all this sound correct? That last bit anyway. I just want to be prepared going into my next appointment so I don't end up with a guy like the one I mentioned.
Thanks for your videos, they rock!

Before the probing, do you use local anesthesia and antibiotic shots?
