Tonsillectomy Pain Control in Kids and Adults

Pain control after tonsil surgery is an important topic given how common this surgery is. Furthermore, pain control directly influences post-operative complication rates, mainly dehydration and bleeding. With poor pain control, a patient will not hydrate as well as they should leading to a dry throat which further exacerbates the pain. With a dry throat, it increases the risk of bleeding just like chapped lips can lead to cracked bleeding lips.

I’m terrified from reading the comments. I’ve been told by medical professionals it’s harder and more painful for adults to heal than kids. I have horrible chronic tonsilitis and stones and want them removed so badly but I’m scared !

My daughter is six and on day six of tonsillectomy and adenoid removal the pain she’s STILL in is outrageous to believe she’d make it through on Tylenol and Motrin

Tylenol does legitimately NOTHING for her after giving her a dose she’ll be trembling and crying until she can have a dose of Motrin and even that only lasts about a half hour MAYBE, the only thing that even helps is her narcotic they prescribed and that will only work for about two hours

My husbands away on a work trip for three weeks and knowing what I know now I would have NEVER done this alone in a million years being that I have another child to care for I’ve slept 10 hours total in four -five days I have insane tachycardia from being so sleep deprived and not eating right

I’m only posting this because YES some kids are fine but In my case NO my daughter is miserable and I’ve done EVERYTHING possible to help her for both of our sakes to no avail so if anyone else is thinking of tackling this alone when you could have help please make sure you have it especially if you have other children because I breastfed two kids under two and I even went back to working two jobs 50-70 hour weeks and it doesn’t touch the exhaustion I’m in now

Day 11 of tonsillectomy and pain is still terrible. Taking norco for pain, but I skip 2 doses a day.

I'm on the 6th day(I'm 49 old) and yes! It's painful not able to sleep eat and painful water swallow every time, and yes! Keeping praying asking mercy to God.
Whatch out with the constipation!! With the narcotics they will clogged your butt try to take fiber magnesium or something else.
God helps the next patient!!!

day 4 still in a bunch of pain can barely talk, ears are killing me and i thought it wouldn’t be that bad bc in the hospital they gave me 2 doses of fentanyl and i was eating a drinking a few hours after surgery but never ever will i do this again or recommend getting it done 🤦🏽‍♀️

I’m on day one and they kept me in the hospital. They are giving me hydro every 8 hours and I can barely swallow anything. No tylenol no ibprophen. I’d be better off at home

BRUH, ive endured the pain like a hero only with ibuprofen at age of 30. hurted like hell. when i see that americans take narcotics to reduce the pain. what is wrongg with doctors from that country. in europe you will get paraacetilaminofenol (paracetamol) wich is a medium pain reliefer.

I am on day 8 and still experiencing a lot of pain. But on day 5 I lost a lot of blood and had to go back in so they could seal the gushing wound in my neck. Now I’m going through the scabbing process again. THIS SUCKS 😢
