French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the withdrawal of the French ambassador and troops from Niger. He says this is in the wake of the July coup that overthrew democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum. Macron says his ambassador and several diplomats will return to France in the coming hours. He added that military cooperation is also over and French troops will withdraw in the months and weeks to come with a full pullout by the end of the year. To discuss this significant development, we are now joined by SABC International News Editor Sophie Mokoena.

For some reason much of the west and the world have been oblivious to France hanging on for so long in Africa. Even French people will go on about the US and UK interventions but be unaware of their 40+ military interventions in African countries since decolonization.

wouldnt that be great if wed have more African nations joining in millitarily to form an African army....its high time Africa becomes the United States of Africa and speak with one voice, getting rid of the evil colonial boarders, ..kudos to Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, ...May peace, unity and restoration of our values be restored as the wolves leave our nations and may we continue to have genuine leaders who serve their people, ..not self interests

When our brothers in Mali and Burkina Faso vowed that they are supporting and are willing to die alongside Nigeriens to help them step closer to independence, this is the highest form of brotherhood than I have ever seen before. This generation of Africans will uproot all colonial legacy's here on the continent.

France's days of behaving like an overlord in Africa, are over. I think it must show political reality to accept the new situation. At present it enjoys very little popularity and respect in the Sahel countries. It will have to work hard to rebuild its relations In those countries.
