GoPro is still the best action camera for underwater video, because of it's superior image quality and it's adaptability for in water and dry land use. When I want a compact action camera, one of the most important aspects is that I can get stable, cinematic underwater footage and be able to store the camera securely when not in use.

Thanks for watching!

James

Good stuff! You’re the first dive channel I watched when I got the bug and I continue to learn a tremendous amount from your videos.

Great review of devices. I favor the selfie stick. It allows for the most flexibility of types of shots, including wide angle selfies . I also like the extension feature to get close-ups of fish and coral. To avoid wobble at full extension, simply choke up on the stick. Between shots, I simply collapse the stick, and let it hang from my wrist via the lanyard (I may just rig up a clip). Then I always have two hands free.

I use the camera tray for my main camera and then a clamp for my GoPro. A clamp you can clip on almost anywhere to stay hands free or hold as point and shoot.

Hey James, great tips and video as always! I normaly use a selfiestick for my gopro manly because of 3 reasons, I am further away from the animal therefor it won't be disturbed, I can point to things with it so I do not need to take an extra device as an aluminium stick (you can also hit the selfie stick against your tank) and I'll grap the stick during the dive so I have a place for my hands when I don't film. The one handed version you have shown is perticullaly good because of the light, I am always missing light so that might be a reason to think about it. I also dive with a redfilter!

I dive a rebreather and find the mask mount really good. With a rebreather both the bubble and head movement issues are far less and I find the set it and forget it factor really important. The major disadvantage I find with head or mask mounted is that if you want to get close into an object you kind of have to stick your face right in there. Quite scary when trying to get close up of a Moray Eel.

I love the real world pros/cons of each. What sounds good on paper vs reality ....

Thank you for this review, James! I am currently using a wrist strap, and I am quite happy with it. It's pretty steady, and what's more, as a beginner diver, I feel that it makes my trim better, as I constantly keep my hands in front of me and learn how to not use them at all.

I'm off on my first overseas dive trip since I got back in the water in a few months! Going on Ryanair so super minimal kit I can take. End result is I don't want to take my Olympus + housing with me, so was looking a cheap "gopro-alike" just to record the dive for memories as much as anything, and some great ideas and advice here as always :)

I would recommend a 3-way for the GoPro instead of a selfie stick. It will fold out if needed, always works as a hand grip and comes with a small tripod in the bottom if you want to set it up for dive by's. I have also used the head strap on a single tank for mounting the GoPro. It can be very boring footage if pointing backwards, however it has picked up some amazing fish life and shots in wreaks that I missed. Pointing forward it is pretty cool although you often get shots of your bubbles!!!!

I actually like my BigBlue GoPro tray kit: 2 lights, very balanced, easy to clip it to the shoulder ring when not using it.

Using my gopro in martinique taught me that I needed to buy a red filter. Much better colors underwater. Good video. I'm going with securing it to my BCD and turning it on when needed. I have lots of pictures of hoses!

I have a wrist strap that works pretty well. Again, remembering to slowly pan to avoid too much movement. Just bought a tray and lights. Going quarry diving tomorrow to test them out. Thanks for all the great tips, James!

I just bought the backpack strap based on this recommendation. Can't wait to try it out this weekend

I’ve tried the back pack mount, but with a dry suit and a lot of other gear it was difficult to find. I’ve had great success just tying a bolt snap to the waterproof housing and clipping it to a shoulder d ring. The camera hangs in the water upside down so you have to flip your footage in post processing. But it’s down and away from my body, always self levels, can be easily removed if I want to hand hold shoot. And cost me $5 and some line to secure it. Just don’t forget to melt your line to keep the knots secure.

Great info! I’ve been using the small floaty stick but I’m definitely going to look in to getting the tray mount and light. I was wondering if you use any of the red diving filters on your GoPro and if you had one you recommended?

Great tips. I personally prefer the double arm tray as this way I get the most stable footage but can be a pain to drag around

Great video. Thanks for discussing options for toting the camera. Very practical and practicable 😊.

Ha of course I’d find what I was looking for here. Classic as always

Best thing about the selfie stick is ‘you can take selfie video’. No other mount will do that. Thanks James
