'Kalinka' - Yevgeny Belyaev and The Alexandrov Red Army Choir (1975)

The Russian folk song "Kalinka" (or "Kalinka-malinka") performed by Yevgeny Belyaev (tenor) and the Alexandrov Red Army Choir.

This song was considered to be a Russian folk song for quite a long time. In fact, the song lyrics and music were written in 1860 by the composer, writer and folklorist Ivan Petrovich Larionov and the song was first performed on an amateur stage in Saratov in a play for which he wrote the music. And soon at the request of the famous singer and creator of the folk song choir Agrenev-Slavyansky, Larionov put this song into the choir's repertoire. So the popularity of the "Kalinka" song began with the Slavyansky Choir.

The song gained world fame in the arrangement of the composer and conductor, the People's Artist of the USSR, Professor Alexander Vasilyevich Aleksandrov (1883-1946). And since that time and up till now the song was widely performed abroad by the Alexandrov Red Army Ensemble.

I don't think anyone EVER sang Kalinka better than Evgeny Belyaev. I've watched him sing it at the 1965 Tchaikovsky Hall concert that you uploaded some time ago and that performance is my absolute favourite, but this version is just as fascinating because his vocal and musical expression really are second to none. All his performances show great beauty, joy and skill and I am just so glad he recorded as much as he did and that you have undertaken to upload them for a new generation to appreciate. Thank you!

My grandma last asked me what kind of music I listen to and I played this. Then she started singing along (in Russian while we are Dutch) and she said that this was my grandfathers favourite music and he always played it on Sundays. And she gave me a couple of very old vinyls of the Alexandrov Ensemble and Ivan Rebroff and the soundtrack of doktor Zhivago. I wonder if I like this music so much because of him. That would be really interesting and I am going to ask it to my biology teacher lol. And thank you for the subtitles because she never had any idea what she sang until yesterday.
