i used a strong “ow!” instead of “settle” so the reaction to him biting is more universal. i don’t expect everyone who plays with him to tell him to settle if they feel teeth, but i do assume they’ll yell out “ow!” even if it doesn’t actually hurt them. and it absolutely worked. he’ll actually check in and “apologize” for playing too rough.

When my dog was a puppy i ended the playtime as soon as she took a bite or a nibble and i went away for some minutes, after that she learned when her teeth make contact with human skin the game is over. Calming them down by restricting their movement doesn’t ’t work on every dog, there are some dogs out there that will fight back for a long time and get even more excited. Either give them a small correction when there is blood bc of the nibbles and they won't stop and just get even more excited, or end the play with some kind of squeak sound and go out of the situation. Always depends on the dogs temperament.

I say “ow!” In a way that startles them and lets them know it was not appreciated. Disengaging from your dog when they show undesired behavior is the best trick I’ve learned. Make sure you give them attention for desired behaviors.

One of the few McCann techniques I disagree with. In my experience it either just riles up the pup more, or can really startle it. Better to try other solutions first, like stand up and ignore/turn away, reverse timeouts, etc. And then it also comes down to simply reducing the opportunities the pup has during this phase (longer tug toys, forgoing cuddling) as well as enforcing naps, since overtired pup seems to be one of the biggest causes of this in the first place.

I tried that with my 3 month old husky puppy. Maya didn’t care she still loved how I tasted still trying to bite me. I hope she grows out of it.

I just go "Ow" loud and sharp and play stops for a bit. I really don't like how you give him a treat. I don't think you give enough of a "no contact" for him to learn not to nip you. Instead he's learning that nipping is a great way to get attention and treats.

My puppy was doing so well with biting but I noticed a lot of people instinctively put their hands in his mouth. It is really annoying because it reverses the training I do.

I have tried this, and seemingly everything else, to get my pup to stop biting, but he is relentless. He is not trying to be mean, I know he's just playing, but HE WON'T STOP!! I have bruises and cuts all over me. I need help!!!
