Earth has a magnetic field primarily due to the movement of molten iron and nickel in its outer core. This movement generates electric currents, which in turn produce a magnetic field.

I came here because I thought of the question “why would the earth want to protect itself and the living creatures from solar radiation?” Which is an illogical question as earth is not a biological creature that can self-adapt. It turns out it’s just luck that it has a liquid metal outer core that creates a magnetic field.

Student: Why does the earth have a magnetic field?
Teacher: Dynamo Effect
Student: thanks.
<time passes>
Student: Saying "Dynamo Effect" helped me as much as saying "Flux Capacitor" -- I still don't understand how a bunch of swirling melted iron generates a magnetic field.

A better explanation, without the phrase "dynamo effect"

So why does the earth have a magnetic field

Literally searched for this. Thanks 👍🙏👍

We CANNOT know what's at the core of the earth since we've NEVER been there. It took the Soviets nearly 20 years to dig a 9 inch hole in diameter less than 8 miles deep and they were wrong and everything they thought they were going to hit every mile down.

The explanation and the animation were awesome..

A recent scientific publication on the "Origin of Geomagnetism" shows "A New Hypothesis to Fully Justify the Generation, Maintenance and Behavior of Geomagnetism". Just search.

It would be impossible for life to start on Earth with a very strong past magnetic field

Is the magnetic field the reason why we are stuck to the planet ? With iron in our blood, how big does a magnet have to be to have a safe pull on us ?

I’ve never thought about this before but what if astronauts used the MF to repel from earth just like magnets repell from each other lol

You need to blast the BGM a tad louder, I can still hear the voice.

I'm sorry, but there is no need for currents on the order of giga amps to produce geomagnetism. All you need to do is have moving electrical charges.

Can u explain why does liquid metal creates that electric currents? i know metals are a great electric conductor, but i dont really understand how it creates the electric currents

Forget the self-excited geodynamo conjecture to justify the origin of the magnetic field of the Earth, the Moon, and the celestial bodies. Magnetic fields can be generated not only by electrical currents but also by the movement of electrical charges. Earth's magnetic field originates from the solid inner core, not the turbulent liquid core. This hypothesis was mathematically proven by the foundations of electromagnetism. You can learn more by accessing recently published manuscripts.
What about magnetic reversals, why does this occur? Reversals occur due to the large impacts of large asteroids on our Planet. The mystery was solved.
