Today I'm testing the NEW Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN against it's 35mm siblings - the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM, Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN and Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN - to find out once and for all, which is the BEST 35mm lens from Sigma?

In Tuesday's video, I tested the brand new Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art against the 2012 Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, and in that test I found out that the new comer is a pretty damn good lens! But is it the best 35mm on Sigma's roster? Well, let's find out...

I have Sigma 35mm F1.2. Love it, had Sigma 35mm DG Art for nikon DSLR, and this one beats it in every category. Especially rendering and landscape colours are better. Also bokeh at 3-5 meter is amazing, like a tree with 7 branches going up, at F1.2, the background is still nicely blurred, yet the tree is mostly pin sharp in focus. F2 would struggly.

For travel i also bought 35mm GM as i find the Sigma DG DN F2 slightly to soft for my liking (i short primary landscape). It's an amazing lens, but a little clinical. If it's your first 35mm lens you buy you might not notice :D but for instance Sony 24mm GM has better bokeh and rendering, but lower sharpness.

Still the Sigma 35mm F1.2 has special place in my heart. For instance i could shoot 1/6400 sec, in slightly cloudy situation (sun still strong though), with F1.8 this would be like 1/2500. F1.2 on one hand is overrated but on the other hand opens possibilities and creativity in my opinion. Having a good sense of realism is best balance. I sometimes just shoot it at F1.6, F2 to find right depth of field, but F1.2 i almost always try just to see if the shot is nice, more often then not, the result is a 'wow' from me. But there are times the F2 shot looks actually better.

Thanks for the shootout! Maybe turn the music down though, I have to turn the music down, then turn up again when your speaking. It subsequently diminishes your commentary I think. Thanks again.

holy shit Tom! great review and side-by-side; loved the in-depth look into certain details with some great examples. Thank you! For me, as an documentary photographer, I think my choice will be between the new f/2 and new f/1.4.... I'll probably end up with the new f/1.4 thb.

I have the old HSM and feel you should have awarded points for “potential weaponry” as well as “babe magnetism”, both categories it would have won.

As far as I understand it, it is only the mount which is splash and dust proof on the F2 and old F1.4, the new 1.4 and 1.2 are fully splash proof with rubber gaskets around all rings and switches..?

I just want to thank you again. I bought the sigma 85mm14dgdn because of you and it's amazing. I'm about to buy the sigma 35mm...I'm gonna flip a coin between the 1.2 and the 1.4.

Thanks for this video. You're the best.

Can you do a video comparison between sony 35mm 1.8 and the new sigma 35mm 1.4 ? In US the Sony lens is $750 and the sigma is for $900, which is not a big price difference, but here in Canada the sony lens is for $700 and Sigma is for almost $1200.
