I am Gerald Undone and, contrary to the Sony GM, I don't breathe.

Man i don't own any sigma lenses, sony lenses, or full frame cameras but I still end up watching your videos and learning so much from them because the basic principals and problems when it comes to lenses and cameras in photography and cinematography carry over across brands and models. I appreciate your in-depth reviews.

Thanks for another thorough and technical review Gerald! Considering here in Europe the Sony 1.4 GM retails for €1700, the Sony 1.8 for €700 and the Sigma will be priced at €849 and also considering I will be using the lens mainly for photography and not be close-focusing too often, the Sigma may still be the best option for me.

That's interesting how different of results we have all seen. I just looked over my head to head results on the a1 between the Sigma and the GM and found that Sigma was equally sharp (a hair better, actually), with the GM having the edge in the outer third of the image circle. I did see the CA you mention in a few shots, but not persistently like you encountered. Did your copy seem properly centered? I've had lenses damaged in transit that underperformed.

my theory with the sigma 35 f 1.4 is that they designed it to be a competitor to the zeiss 35 f1.4. its nearly the exact same size and form with drastically better images. i dont think sigma counted on sony releasing a gmaster just weeks before they released their own. i expect this lens to have a version 2 in the near future.

Best in-depth review! On my copy of the lens I also did notice a bit of aberrations especially in the catchlight of the model eyes, when using strobe! I’ve been using A7R4, and it was quite sharp, but it was detailed enough to see that aberrations! Cheers from Japan!

the "all right, I'm done" had my mind completely undone.

I'd love to see you get your hands on industry standard cine lenses and compare them against the best offerings from photography companies to see the differences and benefits of each. Just an idea!

Sony f1.8 is still the winner in my book. Had the lens since release and don’t see the need to upgrade 🤙

Your reviews are as good as Sony’s latest G Master lenses. I appreciate the different viewpoints from the colabs. For me, compact size (and light weight) is everything for street photography and travel, so yet another reason the two Sony 35’s win out for my personal style and use. Thank you for these excellent series of reviews!

How is it that you only have 285k subscribers? just getting into photography and you are my go-to creator as your videos are super in depth. I have bought any lenses because they are expensive but hoping eventually to afford one

Good to see the A1 made its way off the shelf!

A lot of these issues with this lens would be more prominent to photographers and not filmmakers, in my opinion. Watching a movie, I'm not going to "punch in" to look for chromatic aberration or focus bands. I guess that's one of the nicer aspects of filmmaking. Of course, the focus breathing would be an issue. And from what I've seen from this video, the bokeh is pretty clean...except when you "punch in". Thanks for another thorough Undone review. I don't know too many people that cover products with such detail, other than Philip Bloom and Jared Polin. I'm a grateful subscriber to be sure. 😀

that hazy diffused look is called spherical aberration. it only shows at close focus distances (~ half a meter or less) and usually goes away by stopping the lens down by one or two stops. my guess is that sigma intentionally left this aberration partially uncorrection in favor of smoother out-of-focus rendering

Hahaha I was JUST binge watching your sigma 35’s, g master 35 AND your sigma 40 and suddenly this pops up!
