Your fried dough looks like what we call 'vetkoek' here in South Africa. We normally fill it with a curry mince, but we also stuff it with various savoury or sweet fillings. Or just eat it like you did with syrup :)

We put tomato sauce and grated Parmesan on ours. Then we eat the ones with sugar for dessert! Yummy!!!
