Perfect flash photography is completely achievable, easy and actually fun when you use the right tools and techniques! This video is the first step on the journey of learning flash photography from the ground up. In a future video - The One Light Portrait - I will demonstrate this metering technique to create a beautiful indoor flash portrait with only ONE flash.

Thanks so much. I just sat in an introduction to flash class on Saturday. So, this video was both timely as a follow-up to that class and helped with a better understanding of how to get started. I wasn't completely sure about the ambient light. But, now I understand that in the beginning the ideas is to eliminate the ambient light. Thanks!

I always use a flash meter at live events
